--> So I've lived in Portland, OR for a little while. I've played some shows here, etc. Recently, I've felt this desire recently to try to take my music to a bigger audience. Personally, I want my music to be liked by others, it's important to me. I'm sure many of you do music just for yourselves, which is cool, but I don't think doing music for yourself and for others' enjoyment are mutually exclusive.

you can have some of my popularity.
i have plenty.

in my dreams.

In my band at the moment we're sort of sick of feeling like we have to give people what they want - what most people want in manchester at the monment is shit.
But 'most people' is not 'everyone'. So we're trying to create a little scene of likeminded bands, laptoppers and DJs for people to get into. Our venue is a bit out of the way, we don't chage to get in and we give out free CDs wth exclusive tracks you can't get from our myspace or anywhere else. In addition, cos we're offering bands a chance to play a decent gig, we're getting offered better gigs to play. We've had next to no press for the night, not even listings entries (we have tried but they seem to ignore it) but i think that sort of adds to the exclusivity of it. When we do break in the press they'll be like "look what we've been missing!" Giving out badges and CDs is deffo a good plan. Hooking up with other EMers might be your best way forwards, create a little gang that people want to be part of (look at the history of rephlex / roots of IDM as evidence!)

you have a venue?
wtf?
what? where?

last year i was djing at a small cafe/bar at the village i'm from. i was playing freestyle sets (trip-hop, jazz, soul and sometimes a little hip-hop & rock), no underground or "sophisticated" stuff. sometimes i thought it'd be cool to be able to play tracks of mine along with the rest. of course that wasn't possible with the hardcore hip-hop / breakbeat stuff i was making. i decided that i want some more people to listen to my music, like friends of mine who don't have an interest in modern, experimental or edgy music. my tracks are much simpler, less noisy and more musical now and i still enjoy what i'm doing while i'm doing it (not only after i've played it to someone). i don't know if what i want is popularity or to put a smile upon certain faces, but anyway it feels good when my mom comes to my room and says "hey, i love that song!". i'd like things like that to happen more often.

it also depends on where you live and who you hang out with. like p2 said, sometimes you adapt your music (i mean in a good way) to attract the interest of a certain group of people.

filling an auditorium/stadium with people is another story tho, is this what you're talking about? if so, i'd be interested to observe your progress until you become the next superstar musician

soft: er, nope...
I meant 'our venue' as in the venue where we do our night! oops!
ps: i keep meaning to say thanks for coming to watch us in oldham, sorry i didn't get chance for a proper chat...
so, cheers!

what did you think of starbase109?
like farenheit 451 if kraftwerk and some kids entertianers did the soundtrack...

aaaaah right! no probs man.
looking forwad to the 7.7.7 gig! its being filmed. i might be helping out....if i can borrow a camera from work.

starbase109 are absolute class!!!! they put on a proper good show.
and probably the only good band you will see where you will be grinning CONSTANTLY from beginning to end of their set.
the stage/props are outrageous!.....i nearly fell over with laughter at the way they make their entry on stage. brilliant.

i'm not gonna be at 7.7.7, in brighton that weekend.
the other chaps are doing a 7" set like.

I URGE YOU ALL TO SEARCH FOR "Starbase 109" ON YOUTUBE AND WITNESS THEM IN ALL THEIR GLORY!!!

How many free CD-R's do you plan on giving away? How many Free Shows are you going to play? Do you think your music should be free?

The packaging has A LOT to do with price, but you can personalize the package to have a better mark-up price. Draw a picture. Lame or not, people dig that shite.

Another way to build up shows is to ask some of the lovely people on here for gigs. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. And try Craig's List. I did. It sucked, but people heard my music AND they bought some CD's.
