--> So my girl and I are in the process of moving. We're almost done now, but yesterday we moved a bunch of shit and the vast majority of it was gear I never use. A milkcrate full of busted toys, a toy piano, 2 acoustic guitars, a bass, an old belt drive, etc. I felt like such a moron for keeping this stuff and not doing anything with it. At least I gave one of the guitars to my buddy who doesn't have any toys at his place.

But it's times like this that make me start thinkin' about software again. It's not as fun to use as hardware, but man...next time I moved, if I didn't have to worry about the sequencers, the beatbox, the keyboards, the mixers, the synths. And I don't even do shit with them!

I guess I've just been too busy. That's a hella lame excuse, so many people have done amazing things in the tiny spaces of time between school, work, and sleep. But I guess I'll be unemployed and I'll have all this free time, and I can see which of these things I really care about. Cos I really need to ditch the rest of em.

- i love it though

holy shit bla...tha's craziness.

i hear you license....that's exactly what i did this weekend. only on top of gear i rarely use, i also have piles of records, cds, books, and comics. total packrat, and it makes moving a real chore. i feel your pain.

moving is great - it makes you reassess why you keep all the shit you dont use and lug it all around everytime you move. Im going to be moving soon and Im in the process of pruning back my records and getting rid of all the shit I dont use anymore.

As soon as you get rid of excess gear, you'll think of an awesome way you can use it, and then you'll have to buy it again.

ok- i do use some of that stuff sometimes
im in the middle of sorting out my room- im not moving but im trying to turn it into a usable studio instead of a mound of junk + a bed
hopefully when ive sorted it all out and put it all in the right places ill be inspired to actually write some music and use all my compulsive ebay purchases
my room is only about 3x3 metres and ive already removed about 10 sacks of rubbish/recycling- i cant believe all my gear and all that rubbish actually fits in there

same here. with thrwoing away stuff on my move, but man this is some hard time to decide wether you'll use it again at some point or not. and i'm not only talking about gear, because that is a minor issue for me. it's more about cds, clothes, books and such.
can feel you there.
software might be a good solution, like get some really dope ass midi gear and then you have the best of both worlds
i have to move sometime in the next month. i'm looking forward to it though, cuz i won't have to live with my in-laws anymore (we've been living with them since our apartment flooded 8 months ago).

but yeah, its a pain in the ass.

Holy shit, bla!

Yeah, airliner, it is the same with me, except the comics. Fortunately I only have about 300 CDs so it's basically just 2 heavy ass boxes. I have about as many records, too, but they look so cool in the milkcrates that somehow carrying them around does not feel quite as bad.

Some other stupid shit:
-Tascam 4 track
-Dot matrix printer
-"Spare" Behringer mixer which I never use - I think I'll send this to my brother who has no gear but his laptop

I think you're onto something there, Zanf. I'm really thinking about what things I want to keep. Funny thing is, I haven't made music in so long I don't really remember what my process is and I'll have to spend the next couple months figuring that out. I get so wrapped up in that, though, I get overwhelmed and then I go on the porch and sulk and chainsmoke, when the most logical thing to do is just figure out what I need the least and get rid of it. And then repeat until I no longer feel like I'm drowning in gear.

i just moved from a house where i had an entire floor for my bedroom & studio to a 3 bedroom apartment where my room is literally a room for my bed. my studio has been consolidated to whatever fits on an a-frame in the living room. i hated moving but enjoyed the process of paring down and thinking about what was and wasn't necessary. i have to move again in 2 months. booooooooo.

but this sort of defeats any effort you make if you intend to live 'in the moment'. Its like those blokes who pick everything up when they walk home 'because i can find a use for that sometime'. You just end up like that bag lady in the movie Labrynth

owning or not owning things makes no difference whether you live in the moment or not, imo

i blame doing (and failing) an art degree for me collecting and keeping for future use all kinds of useless crap

unless you're owning a time machine...then it makes ALL the difference.
