--> So my girl and I are in the process of moving. We're almost done now, but yesterday we moved a bunch of shit and the vast majority of it was gear I never use. A milkcrate full of busted toys, a toy piano, 2 acoustic guitars, a bass, an old belt drive, etc. I felt like such a moron for keeping this stuff and not doing anything with it. At least I gave one of the guitars to my buddy who doesn't have any toys at his place.

But it's times like this that make me start thinkin' about software again. It's not as fun to use as hardware, but man...next time I moved, if I didn't have to worry about the sequencers, the beatbox, the keyboards, the mixers, the synths. And I don't even do shit with them!

I guess I've just been too busy. That's a hella lame excuse, so many people have done amazing things in the tiny spaces of time between school, work, and sleep. But I guess I'll be unemployed and I'll have all this free time, and I can see which of these things I really care about. Cos I really need to ditch the rest of em.

but collecting stuff and ending up hoarding stuff in a 'Ill do that in the future' cupboard isnt really conducive to living in the moment. Its similar to putting stuff off all the time using 'Ill do that in a bit' excuse.

And owning stuff just ends up owning you as you have to carry it around when you move and you fret about other people stealing it.

LOL. I'm one of those blokes. :p

As far as dope ass MIDI gear I'm pretty much set. I mean all this shit is cheap, but I am able to do pretty much whatever I want:
-Beatbox (RY30) that sends CCs per-step and can do some weird things w/ incoming MIDI
-Controller keyboard/MIDI&Audio interface (Ozone)
-Oldskool sequencer (MC-50mkII) that I can get fairly anal with
-Another olskool sequencer/keyboard/synth (SQ80) that's easy and great for jamming
-Fx processor (Quadraverb) with full MIDI control
-Sampler (A5000) with all the polyphony, memory, filters, and effects I could ever want, 10g HD, also really good MIDI control of various parameters and I'm planning on using this for hardware multitracking - I'm anticipating using this as my main piece of gear
-Micro Modular - whatever I want it to be, as long as that doesn't involve delay or transmission of MIDI data.

...That's all the shit I really care about. Besides the "glue" pieces like the MIDI patchbay, the mixer, the tapedeck. It doesn't feel quite excessive but it seems to be on the borderline. Does this seem pathological? I can't tell. Maybe I am nuts.

This is all excruciatingly true.

But its only from self observations.

I have realised that I collected books, vinyl, synths, computers, clothes, cds, etc etc etc and now I want to get rid of about 80% of my stuff so that I can go whereTF i like and not have to worry about storing it all, etc.

I realised I had to get rid of a lot of my stuff when about 8 -10 years ago I had about a week of dreams of being burgled and all my vinyl getting robbed (like they would - the stuff is too heavy and bulky to steal) and ended up so stressed from it.

That and Ive got a tr626 that Ive been circuit bending for about 3 months now that I keep looking at saying "yeah - Ill get on with that a bit later."

i have fears of getting burgled- if they got into my room theyd be like 'yes! fucking jackpot! were rich!'- theyd rob as much as they could carry only to find out its all cheap and crappy and isnt worth its weight in weight

so if you got rid of the tr626, you'd be more productive?

I think we're arguing the same point.... don't let stuff get in your way. I', just playing Devil's Advocate saying getting rid of things wont make you any more productive than buying "that next piece of gear that'll really make everything easier".

Same here. I see these pictures of people's studios and it'll be like a laptop, a controller/interface, some monitors and maybe some nice compressor/guitar/synth that just makes more sense to have in a hardware form. And I think...shit you could move all that stuff to your car in 5 minutes!

I was in the parking lot a couple nights ago w/ a crate of vinyl, and some guy was wandering around talking on his cell phone. He wasn't really following me, just happened to be checking on his friends who lived in the same building as me, and I got really paranoid and just stopped because I didn't want him to see where we lived/parked, so I just stood there and glared at him, smoking a cigarette until he left. It was just raw paranoia. It was really dumb. I hate that feeling, it's such a burden.

Hah! I had exactly the same thing going! I opened mine up, lost all the screws, and eventually lost the 626 itself. Only mine had been sitting around for more like a year and a half. That thing does sound fucking awesome when bent, though.

im supposed to move at the end of the month or so -- up north a little ways to go to a differnt school -- im lookin forward to it just cause i get to ditch a bunch of shit ---

differnt for people with more stuff i suppose -- but -- still -- im overwhelmd by it all at the moment -- nothing gets done -- and ive started and stoped a move recently so i was looking forward to clearing house at that time -- then didnt -- and just couldnt stand the stifling presence of all the clutter so i hjust have done nothing about it in anticipation of the NEW prospective move -- its really hamperd productivity ...

It was more of the line that when you move, you realise that you have cupboards of this stuff that you always planned to do stuff with but never got around to.

I think we're both mature enough [well, you might be ;) ] to know that a new bit of gear does not a better musician make. I was sort of arguing the 'less is more' path when it comes to resources. Im the same as bla in that Ive got a few bits of gear in my studio that I dont use and are just pretty lights when i switch everyhting on but I still sort of kid myself that 'oh Ill gget aorund to using that soon' but never do.

Ive been trying to have the mindset that someone out there will use it and love it more than I have/will and they might even give me some money for it that I can then use to pay someone else to do all the stuff for me that Ive been planning to do for ages

colin - youre keeping the shotgun though yeah? youll need that when you move north. more than ever before ;)

i need to sell all of my drums and get vdrums. god i hate moving drums. it makes selling my car an incredibly hard decision

I live in Portland, where there are tons of dirty hippies always telling me to "get rid of your stuff, it just bogs you down, man".
And what do they do all day? I mean, besides study the very intriguing nature of CARPET?

And now, Zanf, I will always think of you as one of those dity hippies trying to get me to free my mind from the oppresive nature of posessions.
:P :P :P

The irony is that I tend to have the most respect for those guys that can just bust out a synth and a sequencer and make the most amazing stuff. Like when someone told me that Autechre made one of the Peel sessions w/ just a couple of TX81Zs and some effects, I fell even deeper in love with them.

No, think of me more as a bauhaus minimalist fascist, doused more with the fragrance of brut33 rather than patcholi. Anyway, I always imagined you as... link
