So my girl and I are in the process of moving. We're almost done now, but yesterday we moved a bunch of shit and the vast majority of it was gear I never use. A milkcrate full of busted toys, a toy piano, 2 acoustic guitars, a bass, an old belt drive, etc. I felt like such a moron for keeping this stuff and not doing anything with it. At least I gave one of the guitars to my buddy who doesn't have any toys at his place.
But it's times like this that make me start thinkin' about software again. It's not as fun to use as hardware, but man...next time I moved, if I didn't have to worry about the sequencers, the beatbox, the keyboards, the mixers, the synths. And I don't even do shit with them!
I guess I've just been too busy. That's a hella lame excuse, so many people have done amazing things in the tiny spaces of time between school, work, and sleep. But I guess I'll be unemployed and I'll have all this free time, and I can see which of these things I really care about. Cos I really need to ditch the rest of em.

LOL brilliant.
mlbot said: "just playing Devil's Advocate saying getting rid of things wont make you any more productive than buying "that next piece of gear that'll really make everything easier"."
do you mean that it's a switch in how you think that what makes you more productive, not having less or more gear?
But a change in your environment (less, or different, gear) can be a catalyst for that switch or course.. getting rid of clutter seems to help alot of people focus. And like zanf mentioned stuff often has some kind of guilt or fear attached, those feelings must be bad for productivty.. unless you're making guilt&fearcore.
edit: hows that for a banal comment haha

Getting rid of stuff and paring down has always helped me be more productive. I totally respect what you're saying, ml, because whether or not the stuff was in the apartment didn't really *make* the change in my head... I think, for me, though, I get really distracted when there's lots of stuff to fiddle with... so I do need a physical separation from those distractions. (Each person needs to figure out their own working habits and how to encourage work, at all, though, obviously.)

the cool thing about shot-guns is you usually don't have to fire as cocking one is usually a sufficient deterrent.

That's how I am. I have so many guilt issues. "Man, why can't you just rock it with an MC50, a TX81Z, and some effects? Look at Gescom w/ Motor! What's wrong with you?"

i got to move in two months time. my studio is a museum to broken/half working synths. i can't leave them, they will die without me.
the bad thing is i am moving in with an other electronic musician - so we are gonna have two rooms or one big room full of broken/half working synths. and a drum kit + amps in the basement.
oh yes. anyone is welcome round anytime btw.

I did! do you want it? it's pretty rad, it's just missing the screws...I could find em for you but it should work fine the way it is. I'll test it first.
that thing rules though. for someone who wants some badass lo-fi delay w/o the MIDI control, that's the shit. there's a BOSS one like it too but it's more popular so usually more expensive.

can you imagine the effect having a time machine would have for closet space? omg, I could live in my one bedroom apartment forever, and never ever have to worry about running out of space.

FailedSitcom
I've just finished moving house last week as well (just got a proper Internet connection back), but my small set-up meant everything went very smoothly.
I don't know whether you should start getting rid of stuff, but at least make everything you need easy to use (nice desks, patchbay, etc.). If I have to unpack something or go out of my way to get to it, I often just don't bother to use it at all.
Best of luck with everything.
