so on thursday i got in from work, got some tea and sat down at the computer to do a bit of em411ing whilst i was eating.
then this crazy shit happened....
i had about 2 mouthfuls of tuna steak (mmmmm) then i got what i thought was a cramp under my chin .... it became quite clear within about 3 seconds that it wasnt a cramp at all!
the 'cramp' feeling got very intense, spread all over the right hand side of my face and went really really numb. if you have ever slept on you arm by accident and woken up to find it feels totally dead but kinda swollen .... thats the only way i can describe the feeling.....but worse.
i knew there was something really wrong so i got up and tried to run into the kitchen and shout out to my dad. i couldnt get any words out at all or even force a noise out and by this time my eyes were rolling back into my head and i couldnt see where i was going. then i lost consciousness for around 3-5 minutes. all that happened very very fast... well under 10 seconds since first feeling the 'cramp'.
apparently i fell to the floor and was shaking around violently. all the colour drained from me, my lips went blue and my eyes 'rolled back' into my head. then i stopped moving for a while. i came around as the paramedics were taking me to the ambulance.
in hospital they told me id had a seizure and did lots of test and brain scans ... all of which were negative so they let me go home friday afternoon. ive got to go back next week so they can run more tests and scan my brainwaves. they dont know what caused it but some doctors said it could be epilepsy. im 24 and nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
ive got a huge lump on my head where i hit the ground and all my muscles - legs, arms, back, stomach, shoulders, neck - are aching like you wouldnt believe ... i can hardly get up stairs!!
feel a bit groggy and drained too..... im ok though... just feel like ive had a very hard game of rugby
because i had a seizure i can not drive for a year!!!!
A FRIGGING YEAR!!!!!
i work 35 miles away. i bloody love my car too. the best bit about working all that way away was the nice drive over the pennines. good photo opportunites up there (see pics)
anyone else ever had a seizure or anything like that?
anyone get them regularly?
it kinda freaked me out

Wow, crazy. Vivid narrative too. Hopefully it's just an odd one-off anyway, but it's a shame about the driving ban. Understandable, but still annoying.
I've never been to Berlin, but I've spoken to a few electronic musos who love the place and relocated there. Hmm.

soft - that's too bad. i've had epilepsy since i was five years old, and i've never been able to drive. don't worry about the car, now you can just drop "well, actually, i'm part of the post-car society now" into conversations ;)
i imagine you'll be getting an EEG test the next time you go to the hospital. hope you've got short hair, because the glue they use on te electrodes will take ages to come out otherwise
like everyone else said, sit back, enjoy the break, get some early nights and don't sweat it. if you have any questions about epilepsy or you want to know about my experiences, just drop me an emmail.

crappy man
I've had a few too. The one thing I've learned from them is that you can predict when they're coming (at least the ones I've experienced), or what triggers them. Learn to understand them, makes them avoidable, or at least tolerable.

well that sucks. but look at it this way.. from here on out, if you are ever in a bad/awkward situation u can just fake a seizure and just get right out of it.
i too had a friend that a seizure about 5 years ago. happened once and hasn't happened, since. it seems to me that since you are so old to have your first one, you probably won't be getting them regularly.
good luck.

"and btw. j-chot. that'S the most idiotic reponse i read in a long time"
Actually there have been studies for DECADES that have all said the same thing.
People who are prone to occasional seizures pose less threat to public safety than someone who has had one heart attack.
Every year there are hundreds of cases of hear attacks causing traffic accidents. Many of them were first time heart attacks.
Of first time seizures there are nearly no examples.
Yet still these laws exist in the US and Britain.
It is really just discrimination against the handicapped and ought to be left up to the doctor involved.
This is one of many recent things that is going from the public health sphere to law enforcement. in fact there was a case in the US here where a seizure was used as a reason to deny a driving license. The cause? A cop was beating the crap out of the person bad enough to make them seizure, so the cops labeled the person in an attempt to also make sure that they couldn't support their family as revenge for suing them for brutality.
If these laws were about public safety then you would see more driving bans for first time heart attacks.

'handicapped' is a discriminatory term. check the etymology as to why.

That sucks. I'm sorry to hear it.
Hurray for working from home/moving to Berlin. Sounds like you have a nice boss.
RE: driving: I nearly lost my driving priviledge after falling asleep at the whell of a work truck. That was more a result of stupid behaviour than any chemical imbalance. Luckily, the cop decided that he wouldn't ticket/report since no damage was done.[/end pointless comment]
