--> I got this idea today to make a site sharing some of the sounds I've created using bent gear and recordings. I've got such a huge surplus of these sounds I think they need to be shared.

I've already got an domain name(and webspace) i'm not using, so it's not really a matter of money.

The sounds will be arranged into sequenced loops and (maybe) one-shot samples, then they will be categorized from their origins, like if it was made using a specific instrument or if they have a "theme".

I get like this every summer, need to start some kind of new project. Allthough this time the goal isn't to get rich or die trying but more about getting feedback from people and sharing sounds at no cost(except a lifetime spam-subscription to updates of the site).

What do you think of this?

And a question, how can copyrights used by syntheziser manufacturers when it comes to sounds their instruments produce? Would it be legal to ... for example make a gameboy drumloops set. Or a commodore 64 set, or a roland drummachine set?

why dont you stick em on freesound?
or did you mean you wanna sell em?

I don't know the first thing about how the law relates to posting, but I know I have never EVER heard of anyone getting a letter or anything. At worst, thats all that would happen. But why not just use freesound?

Well, that would'nt be much of a project just posting stuff on a website.

I wanna do something myself, something personal and create and outlet for sounds that have to pass some sort of quality check before being made public. As far as I can tell freesound doesn't have that and contains alot of crap.

Half of the project would be making the website, something that I enjoy doing. And right now I feel like starting this kind of project ;)

The domain name by the way is link currently hosted at link

Roland lettered up this MT-32 emulator. The argument goes that samples in the machines are recorded sounds. Of course, following USA case law regarding sampling, that means anyone who uses the MT-32 (or any sample-based synthesizer/drum machine) in a song is infringing on Roland's copyright. Which just goes to show how dumb USA sampling law is.

Deltasleep is right though--as long as you don't go head-to-head with a corporation (ie, don't call your site "Roland Treasure Chest") they won't care. You might get a letter if you try to sell the stuff. Give it away and you'll fly totally under their radar.

I'm with the first 2, go freesound. It may be fun to do your own website, but your samples will get so much more use if they're tagged and hosted in freesound where people will actually go looking for them. Even once you build your own site, you gotta advertise it to people somehow.
Host on freesound, get comments on your samples, then use the time you saved on a different project.

There's a new Web 2.0-y Freesound killer out there now too.

worry about copyright only in theory.....(sniff)

i say do it, freesound is and was nothing but trouble for me.

oerfil - that gorrila on the other site. that's awesome... music and all red...
so, timbaland ripped off some bleep dudes' video game tunes. he got media attention.
timbaland also rips lots (lots!!) of gear samples. admitted in interviews as well.
so, he does not even get attention.

so, if you were sharing gear sounds and you made half a billion, casio would probably want some.
my other question was, how come you don't make it a member only or invite place for em411 type folks.
maybe a em411 sample box that is public domain samples, like for the old mixit?

i made a dumbass move and posted mixit 39, 40, etc. on freesound.
someone from em411 (freesound admin said it was em411 admin) complained and they were yoinked.
now i realize that public domain is not creative commons and i just don't care enough to read stuff... lol haha . oh...

sounds really cool, but i would prefer more one-shots myself.

i think you have a great idea. i would definitely be into using some bend samples, etc. from your site.
i think you should build your own site instead of using freesound. i have built 4 websites & know how much fun that project can be.
plus you get to express your unique self in the design of it & graphics you use.
