so i did it.
today .... i got a macbook!!
my laptop is really really crap and i didn't want vista so though 'fuck it - i'll get a mac'
# Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2GHz
# 667 MHz FSB
# 4 MB Cache
# 1 GB RAM
# 80 GB Hard Drive
# SuperDrive (DVD RW Drive)
# 13.3" TFT Display
# MAC OS X v10.4 TIGER
# 64MB Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics
the HD is only 5400 but i assume i can change it out at a later date?
i'll be adding more RAM when i have enough money too.
keeping my desktop as my main music making hub and using this as gig/road machine.
i have to say though .... it is rather sexy ;)
i need some progs though.
so i'm asking you guys... what are the essential apps?
free is obviously best but cheap is good too.
im talking anything here from image editing to dj software ... ANYTHING!!
what have i been missing out on in windoze land?
soundhack is the first thing that comes to mind.
hit me up yo!

Congrats. Yes, you can swap out the hard drive and put the one you've got now in a portable enclosure. Firewire recommended, IMO.
Here's approximately the apps I use on mac:

I thought the dark side of the force was when you decide to become a coke dealer.

I'll cover a few smaller utils and apps..
Quicktime Codec Pack : all the components and instructions you need to get divx / wmv / etc. movies to play in quicktime (and systemwide).
Little Snitch : lets you block applications and websites from opening ports and the like.
Adium : Multi-Client Instant Messenger soft.. has its share of bugs but has gotten pretty stable now.
Lame Codec : Lame MP3 encoding Codec for Quicktime.

yea congrats thoo, i'm sure you'll have less headaches than i have with my dell.. as far as the hard drive is concerned, I'd say don't bother trading it out, just keep all your apps on the internal one and put all your audio on an external one. For 100 or so bucks you can get a 7200 rpm one at newegg.com. I'd reccomend seagate or western digital.

i don't know.. I prefer to have the current project on the internal hd - i have a 7200 rpm one in my macbook pro and it's a lot faster than when using my (theoretically better + faster) external one HD the FW400 bus. the internal ones are SATA drives after all, it can handle quite a few more tracks at once apparently.
