Alright, so I turned 18 last Friday, the 13th. Sick.
I was vacationing with some family in Erie, and it was pretty fun. You realize how much music means to you when you're stuck listening to Golden Oldies and your computer is around three hundred miles away. My sister gave me my first LP, the new compilation from Tiger Bass. Its a series of remixes which are alot of fun.
As it turned out my great-grandfather Virgil died at 4 am on my birthday. He was a lovely old man who made hilarious comments about the black nurses who cared for him. I wasn't too bummed, more or less just incredibly impressed that he made to 100. It must've been the scotch.
Once we returned to my house (after an eight-hour drive) I found letter waiting that pertained to my social security checks I have been recieving since my mothers death. It said that my checks would now be mailed to me, instead of directly deposited into my joint account, cool by me. But further down the letter it asked us to kindly return any social security money that I had been saving. Uh, WTF?!? What the hell did they think I was going to do with the money? They knew my age so they couldn't have thought I was living on my own. This is around $10,000 towards college that they expect me to just hand back? The part that most pisses me off is that I didn't ask for social security, they just started to send it to me, so WTF?
Apparently I have around 60 days to appeal, but my Dad wants to say that we didn't save any money, which kinda sounds like fraud. I think for now we're just gonna sit tight and wait for them to make a move.
Sorry for such a long rant, but I needed to vent.

Yeah, I have 2000 in a CD right now, and around 8000 in the regular account, I'll just transfer most the other 8000 into the CD. Good idea jdg.

Messing with the taxman is gambling.
You might be in the clear for years.
Then, after you've spent the $10,000 on college, they'll track down the bank account you had the money in and demand it back, plus a hefty penalty.
I vote trying to clear the issue up while you still have the money, not risk trying to clear it up after the money is spent.
For that amount of cash, it might be worth going to see an expert.
Happy b-day, tho. good luck!

I used to work for a University and they paid me "under the table" for a few years. I reported the wages and paid all the $$ they should have witheld at the end of each year. My friends didn't report their wages. One of them got "caught" several years after the fact, and had to pay 4 years worth of taxes, plus interest, please have that ready within a month or face late fees on top of that, thanks.
are you really asking why a giant goverment agency doesn't really know what the fuck its doing, mixedtape? ;)

great links mlbot, maybe appealing would be the best idea since they have to know the account the money is going into since they're sending it there!
