--> Alright, so I turned 18 last Friday, the 13th. Sick.
I was vacationing with some family in Erie, and it was pretty fun. You realize how much music means to you when you're stuck listening to Golden Oldies and your computer is around three hundred miles away. My sister gave me my first LP, the new compilation from Tiger Bass. Its a series of remixes which are alot of fun.

As it turned out my great-grandfather Virgil died at 4 am on my birthday. He was a lovely old man who made hilarious comments about the black nurses who cared for him. I wasn't too bummed, more or less just incredibly impressed that he made to 100. It must've been the scotch.

Once we returned to my house (after an eight-hour drive) I found letter waiting that pertained to my social security checks I have been recieving since my mothers death. It said that my checks would now be mailed to me, instead of directly deposited into my joint account, cool by me. But further down the letter it asked us to kindly return any social security money that I had been saving. Uh, WTF?!? What the hell did they think I was going to do with the money? They knew my age so they couldn't have thought I was living on my own. This is around $10,000 towards college that they expect me to just hand back? The part that most pisses me off is that I didn't ask for social security, they just started to send it to me, so WTF?
Apparently I have around 60 days to appeal, but my Dad wants to say that we didn't save any money, which kinda sounds like fraud. I think for now we're just gonna sit tight and wait for them to make a move.

Sorry for such a long rant, but I needed to vent.

I'm defintily going to try to fight this, its bullshit, I don't think I'd be able to go to college without this money.

maybe when i appeal I'll get a neckbrace or an eyepatch or anything to make me look more pathetic, I need to work on my sad puppy face.

happy birthday jacky boy

there's an interesting documentary by aaron russo about taxation. the premise is we don't legally have to pay income tax. a lot of people are fighting this right now.

i guess what i'm i'm saying is - yeah! screw the tax man!

but, seriously, might want to retain a good lawyer or cpa and try and straighten it out before anything gets worse.

happy b-day.

that's weird have you talked to the social security officials at all? it almost sounds like a scam. happy b-day, btw!!!

Happy birthday jack123. At least get a plain-english explanation about why they want the money back.

Thanks everyone for the support, much appreciated.

Well, this is gonna sound retarded, because, well, it is. Both me and my father are officially named John Anthony Ryan, he's the second, I'm the third. The letter was addressed to him, but referred to my money, and upon closer inspection the letter referred to any money HE may have saved into his own account; as in savings bonds, interest etc., not all of my money. Which is good news for me, but bad news for anyone who was looking for another reason to be pissed at the government.

Happy birthday, and be careful with taxes. My parents got a big refund from taxes, like 30000$, and bought a huge load of furniture for the house with it. And then 5 years later taxes said "it was a mistake, please pay us back with interest", which left us eating pasta for a while.

Also I turned 25 on friday the 13th

hooray! happy birthday to you too!

Alright! Dual Bdays!!!

dual bidets.
clean 2 arses at once.

bbwax - thanks for that link

daswesen - can they really do stuff like that? I mean charge you interest as well? Moral of the story - if you get a nice surprise tax rebate, double check it's yours to keep

My in-laws are currently pursuing compensation after a misadventure with the taxman. Might take it to the EU court, which means they're screwed for life if they lose, I guess. That's what I call stubborn (though I'm secretly proud).

Happy birthday daswesen & jack123!

'..your new book, 'Death & Texas'... No, it's 'Death & _taxes_'. Death & taxes, death & taxes, death & taxes!' hehe good film
