No, seriously, you need to get good italian food while you are in italy! Down by the canal theres a lot to see, and you're just a short train ride away from Venezia, which you should really see before it sinks forever. If you're into Giuseppe Verdi or opera, you should think about tickets to La Scala. Also, I don't know if they give tours, but Verdi's home for decrepit musicians is on the same plaza as a big sculpture of him.
On the road in between como(or bergamo or vicenza or wherever it is you are staying) stop by one of the roadside vendors who sell crepes with nutella on them. They are so good- but I might just think that because I was so starved and exhausted the night I had them.
And I'd imagine you're staying in Como, or around Lago de Como.
Get yourself a good city guide, theres a TON to see and do in Milano, even though it gets talked about by italians as an "all business" city. they're just spoiled by their other cities.

i experienced milano as one of the not so interesting cities in italy. but most likely i am wrong.
still the food can be very good.

Como is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Beautiful sailboats on a foggy lake in the morning in the pre-alps, good food. Italy is a decidedly low-tech kind of place, which you should learn to enjoy.

well, i don't live there but i guess that during august, as any other big city in italy, milan is empty and there's really not much to do: everyone is at the seaside (even tho the trend during the last years is to stay in the city during the summer). At any rates, there's the The Last Supper by Leonardo to see... i know it's not music but prolly it is worth a visit.
As i told i think it's difficult to find something musical going on, so i suggest you follow ds's advice and go to venice before it sinks: there will be even less things to do there, but at least it's a very unique city to visit.
enjoy your stay!

Oh damn thats right, I forgot it was August. You should go see the Cathedral and look at the galleria, and remember that you'll have to schedule a time to get into see the last supper. Restaurants will mostly be open, and traffic will be much lower. It might not actually be a bad time to come through town.
These things are old, really old. To an American, that by itself was amazing.
And you don't have to DO anything in Venice except walk around, eat some food, ride the crowded stinky water bus, that sort of thing. You could easily spend a day there just doing that. And drinking espresso, and make sure to eat affogato cafe.
GOD I miss italy if you can't tell. I had no idea when I left that it would be the better part of a decade before I could afford to go back.
