--> Ok. We need to talk. I used to really like Daft Punk until em978 mentioned this link in the other daft punk blog. I thought instead of hijacking that thread with this discussion, I'd bring it over here.

Take a listen to some of this- a lot of it strikes me as really lazy use of samples! I listen to some of it and think that it's a fair use, and then i listen to other parts and I think "wow thats wayyy too close to a direct ripoff."

Have they gone too far? Doesn't somebody else deserve a LOT of the credit for a Daft Punk record?

lol thanks for the song, kid.
Theres a big difference in using somebody's sound/recording, and using somebody's SONG. I think some of these have crossed the line, big time. When you start making uncredited songs out of 4-8 bars of somebody else's music, thats plagiarism, IMHO.
But I'm all for sampling, just not taking something somebody else wrote and calling it your own.

or even taking something of someone else's to capitalize on the fact that THEY had the good idea first

well, there have been times were original artists have been paid for samples but not credited. well maybe? isn't there?
but I agree with deltasleep.
then again, I still like the daft punk songs, I did however lose some respect for them as musicians in the traditional sense.
and the plus to this is some of those disco songs are fucking awesome! now I can listen to them wherever.

what about the notes on of the albums that said: "All Guitars: Daft Punk"
and they were ALL samples!
like that beast song = robot rock

did nobody listen to 'homework' ?

discovery IMO was mostly cheesy crap .... that link kinda explains why. i thought it was pretty terrible compared to homework.

homework was and still is a kickarse record!! and the tracks they are supposed to have sampled from that link sound sod all like around the world/da funk.
revolution909 is absolute genius. so to say they are lazy/are no good/aren't original/ etc etc etc is just jealousy/stupidity.

again - did nobody listen to 'homework' ? that record is fucking amazing!!

homework was was to repetitive for my tastes. it's even worse to sample a hook and then repeat that as the WHOLE song with a filter.

i can almost guarantee barry manilow and jerry goldsmith are getting paid for this stuff. in that case, good for daft punk. the more use, the better.
which homework song did they do that on?

i take it you dont like techno then?

has homework got that track where they list a load of dj names? everyone should really check out all those peoples stuff
they should do another version with the names of everyone theyve sampled

oh BTW, i do agree that SOME of the sampling they did on discovery is a bit lazy.....but to write them off completely is just dumb.

They're great at digging up stuff and finding ways of using it, but personally I generally prefer more of a chopped up and "cut and paste":y feel.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with them, but I can really care less whether they sample an entire track and slap on a filter, without paying a dime to clear any of it. If it rocks... it rocks (though I am glad some of the credit/scrilla is shared).

One can argue that even the simple act of looping a bar or two, is pretty transformative. Musicianship is overrated in my book (coming from someone who doesn't have a bit of musical knowledge/talent, of course )

I agree with logo, but still smarting over hearing those disco tracks...

Couple things blow my mind about Daft Punk ... and people.

1. How did you not know it was samples?
2. How come when I recommend the same names that are in "Teachers" .. you still have no idea what I'm talking about?
3. Why are the last 2 albums so bad?

But yeah, that's how house has been done since the beginning... get 2 copies of a salsoul record and cut out the parts you don't like. Make the outro the intro... etc.

I miss this style when it was

1. not labeled as "mash up" and was done very naturally...
2. when it was a bit more deep. Like DJ Q's hit .. that sample Instant Funk's "Wide World of Sports".
