--> Ok. We need to talk. I used to really like Daft Punk until em978 mentioned this link in the other daft punk blog. I thought instead of hijacking that thread with this discussion, I'd bring it over here.

Take a listen to some of this- a lot of it strikes me as really lazy use of samples! I listen to some of it and think that it's a fair use, and then i listen to other parts and I think "wow thats wayyy too close to a direct ripoff."

Have they gone too far? Doesn't somebody else deserve a LOT of the credit for a Daft Punk record?

Pretty interesting, their music was never really difficult to emulate and always pretty minimal though. I think much of their success was being in the right place at the right time, knowing the right people ect.

I agree that their albums are sounding more rushed/boring since homework.

I actually never really liked them ...people put them on and I didn't complain .... but I just liked "High Fidelity" ... and "Phoenix" because it sounds like I won a party game of Bomberman.

This shit pisses me off. Fuck them, I'll just seek out the source material.

Also try

MACHINE - There but for the Grace of God
Ectasy, Passion & Pain - Touch & Go
Instant Funk - ... just buy thier album ... easy to find and check. Has "Cryin" "Got My Mind Made Up" and of course "Wide World of Sports"
First Choice - Some good comps out there.. sometimes different versions though. "Dr. Love" "Let no man put Asunder" "Love Thang"

I have yet to read the entire thread, but I have to say this: Electronic music and sampling go hand in hand. Its not just one shot samples chromatically played, its loops, its microsamples, its lyrical phrases, etc. Its a lot of different things. So long as the song that is made is good and its done tastefully thats all that matters. Say your favorite song happens to have a loop that plays throughout the entire song. You then find out that its a sample. Does that make the song any less your favorite than it was in the beginning? Its still the same song.

Like, I don't see anyone tearing apart portishead for looping issac hayes throughout entire songs.

Taavi, Portishead are another band who i felt incredibly disappointed with when i heard all those samples, and it's not just isaac hayes but people like lalo schifrin as well, again some of the originals can be found on the "sampled" range of cds

Taxis rather not Taavi, FFS why does edit still not work!?

cos someone sampled edit to death and now its worn out, like the amen

lol @ djugel
