I loaded Vista64 Beta on my AMD Athlon XP 3800+ -- had it on there for about two days before I removed it because it annoyed me to death, blinking and dimming the screen to ask my permission to do EVERY DAMNED THING to the system. It 'looked pretty' but that was all I could really get from it. I was able to load and run FLStudio, but only use the onboard sound... aside from that, it didn't hold my interest and certainly didn't seem "revolutionary" -- I went back to XP and everything was cool.
My notebook will arrive with Vista Home Premium installed. I'll give it a try, but I have a feeling I'll be making a Ghost DVD of the system and replacing it with XP.

I think the only thing I can think of that would compel me to switch voluntarily:
FLStudio 64
Absynth 64
Until something like that comes along... why not stick with something solid with known-good drivers?

I got a new laptop with vista installed and formatted and installed xp. Then a few months later I put the vista back on for various reasons.
Once you disable the "user account control" (the annoying permission asker) and kill the super-duper aeroglass graphics interface, it works OK. Live works just fine. ASIO4ALL works with very low latency with the internal soundcard and Lexicon Omega soundcard. My MPD16 does not work. That has so far been the only downer.
I haven't been very actively making music with it since the switch, so I may run into more problems once I spend more time.

i'm 90% sure the windows lappy i have will be the last windows lappy i ever buy and i'm not going near vista or upgrading anything on it ever. it works just fine as is and i don't use it to go on line etc. just for music. i'm holding my breathe that one day audiomulch will be mac friendly. as is.. i'm not using that much CPU in my mulch patches so why worry.

I wish my current setup was great.. I have .. gateway laptop mx6446, amd turion 64 mobile 797 mhz, 896 mb of ram.. also running xp media center edition.. I was wondering since my cpu doesn't handle alot of my vstis/vsts with out "crunching, delay, error sounds" then once loaded it plays alright.. but I hate how I have to hear that crap when I want to trigger loops and shit once opening ableton.. is it because I am running xp media center? Should I reformat or something to a plain copy of xp home or pro.. The actual cpu speed on the box says 2.0 ghz and I don't know why I get the 797mhz when I look at system properties. I know that my ram says 896mb instead of the box spec "1.0 ghz ram" because the video car is using 128mb of it... so I should be getting good results with my ableton huh? I even have a creative laptop pc soundblaster audigy 2 with the asio drivers.. Anyone have some help?

Scroll down to the "performance tweaks" section. My latency got way better after I did some of these.

LeoMAN, your bus speed is probably not right, thus choking down your CPU to that speed. On many mobos you'll have to set the bus speed manually- that will get your CPU working at the right speed, most likely. Just look on Gateway's website, and see if you can find it. I can't think of a reason now that I notice it's a lappy, but you might find a tip on gateway's site, or a new BIOS you can install to fix the bug.

I was talking to a nerd friend again- he thinks Vista is "Windows ME all over again!" He says a lot of manufacturers and vendors are offering computers without OSes just because people DON'T want Vista.
But I paid for those other 32-bits and I want to use them!

I haven't spoken to a single person who likes vista yet, apparently though, if you have a legit copy of vista you can legally exchange it for xp or something

LEO, looks like you've got the power-saving features of the CPU enabled, so it's slowing down to conserve power -- usually, you can turn this on and off in the BIOS. Are you using the built-in sound hardware? You might want to try a PCMCIA sound solution, or an external m-audio sound device like a Quattro or an Ozonic...
