--> oh dear. been working on my liveset for a while now. meant to be playing my first proper public gig in September but i am scared. so many other people on here seem to just go for it and i want to, but i am struggling with it. i'd like to play at a STFU too but that scares me just the same.

it's all pretty odd because i have run my own company for nearly 9 years now and i have no worries talking to anyone, no matter how big / famous / important to us they are - even cold calling and shit - which all takes big bollocks.....but playing a gig in front of a few people scares me stiff. in fact in general i can talk to anyone and i aint a geeky recluse - not that i'd mind being one

i guess people will say 'just go for it' but if anyone has any personal tricks to overcome this fear, i'd love to know. hmmmm, maybe i should do a set like a mate of mine. he does a really heavy set and gets totally wankered beforehand......then again......maybe not!

*sobs*

thanks for your comments. some very deep / funny / mad, but helpful stuff. one thing is for sure room, no-one will think i am playing off mp3s...and to answer your last question i guess it is that that scares me most. my liveset is really live and therefore exposes me a lot...not to mention the fact that it could go horribly wrong in places, or just get a bit boring in others - or maybe it's a shit idea and no-one will like it (ok, that's the bit i shouldn't worry about too much right?). if i was just playing mp3s i'd be much less scared but much less fulfilled.

i hear a lot of what has been said and i must do this, it just scares me, in a way few things do. silly sam! oh, and esem, of course i will say hello ;)

ahaha - just seen your last post astroid. that is actually very similar to the set my friend (mentioned in the original blog post) does. the first time i saw him live i thouhgt he was a total prick, as did everyone. he insulted everyone and just went mad. the second time, was a better set in general but he still insulted everyone and yeah, he gave us someone to hate...as well as laugh at, cos he was so pissed he kept falling over and switching all his kit off.....anyway, i am too nice for all that........hehe

don't be nervouse (ok i know that just telling that, doesn't help)

just get some backup tracks running and rehearse beforehand.

don't play too long. it's better playing a short set and people are sad you are already finished with playing, then playing a long set that sucks.
and even if your short set sucks isn't bad, because it'S short.

i like stuff around 30 minutes.

good luck and enjoy it

thanks yghartsyrt. i have been rehearsing and will keep doing so to be honest I'd prefer to do a shorter set but the one in September has to fill a 1 hour slot...but I might just play a couple of mp3s at the end to pad it out - and to let me relax ;)

just relax.
it's just playing live

yeah, i feel silly. like i said, i'm cool about most other stuff....but this somehow makes me nervous. ho hum

i haven't played any shows since (just had a daughter so its been all bottles and diapers lately for me) but when i do i'm sure i'll get real nervous, a little less then the first time but still nervous. just gotta chip away at the insecurity a gig at a time.

yeah, sounds like a plan. i guess i will be happy enough if someone likes it but i suppose that shouldn't concern me too much if i am happy with it....hmmm

edit: ooh, and many congrats on the nipper dude. those little people are amazing.
tequilla.

also, a bit of mind-clearing and focusing always helps me get in the zone. it's nice to be able to mentally remove yourself from the environment, disappear into a little cloud. discorporate.

if you're confident in your music, you will have no fear.

i guess i am not confident in my music really.........i find it very hard to judge. i guess i'd best get out there and find out what other people think.......... :D

i keep thinking i have nailed playihg live, and another bad thing happens.
there are so many things that can go wrong, all that you can count on is that something will go wrong.
and its how you deal with that thing is how well the gig goes. (sometimes)

so be as prepared as you can be. check your gear over before hand and make
sure you take everything you need.

take a set list or some notes of what you are going to do.
when i play guitar i normally have chord notes, and when i play
techno gigs i will have a set list with what setttings go for what song.

make sure you got enough power - a power block is good.
an hour is along time for a gig. try and get it down to 40 mins.
thats the ideal time. 30 maybe even better.

practise your change overs and get some to listen to your set.
record you set if you can and listen to it to see where you can
improve it.

hey quip. thanks for taking the time to help out. sounds like a solid plan. i will be referring to it. ta, sam.

I'd say, minimize the risk of fuck ups. And as you play more gigs, when you feel more secure with your live setup try adding more "live" moments into it.

yeah, you are probably right. in my gig in september i will be doing so a little, as it needs to be dancier, so there is a constant backing track playing, which will help hold things together a bit. so, hopefully that will be my stepping stone

i wouldn't worry about fucking up, people rarely notice.
