One year on, nothing more to show

It's been a year since my quest into music switched from something id muck around with maybe once a fortnight for an hour or so to being a devouring passion...
But I'm no closer to finishing a track .. I've got a few halfway there ones. . my synthesis abilities are much greater, but I've still got jack to show of it all.
I'm starting to see why it is that the internet is in fact the most horrible invention on earth..
I want to go and sell my computer, but I cant because its a 21st gift I was given, so Im stuck, with internet following me everywhere I go
I think I am actually one of those internet addicts. . i have to check . . then refresh 5mins later to see if anythings changed!
It doesnt help that every morning I'm presented with a new array of items to GAS over, another thing that has ultimately led to my downfall. . being a hardware junky aint easy. .. I keep switching sequencers, synths, samplers, etc etc.
Just sold it all, and yes. . you will see my last blog. . proclaiming i had found an answer. . well I was wrong. again. :p Twice an idiot.
I just ordered a DSI desktop evolver and an MPC500, I still have a fair pile of money left over, but I'm not buying ANYTHING. . not even a polyphonic synthesiser.
Still need to figure out a way to stop myself from wasting time online. . any ideas? I still need email and stuff so i cant cut it off completely.
Anyone dealt with and solved this problem somehow? I've taken a year off uni and want to make the most of it, but already a month is gone and nothing to show.

1. find some compilations or projects where you submit a track. they'll have a deadline. so until then you have to finished at least one track.
or:
2. get all your music stuff and go somewhere where there's no internet: countryside, mountains, ...
stay there for 2-4 weeks.
or:
3. get a second computer that you only used for internet. switch it off regularly. i do that in very busy times.

what works for me, is to just start working on a song. and don't worry about how it's sounding just keep adding stuff until it's finished. And if you don't like what u made, don't try to fixit; take what u learned and start another song.
don't put pressure on yourself, that's just going to make things worse. remember, there's got to be some aspect of this that you enjoy or else you wouldn't be doing it. and if there's not an aspect u like about it, then you should either find something u like to do, or stop doing it.

you know what, you dont really have to give up the internet. yes it is addicting, but you just have to spend a little less time on it, and little by little reduce the time you spend surfing, etc. dedicate a session or two of internet activities a day, and do not go back online afterwards, unless you're expecting an important email or are trying to bid on something on eBay. then dedicate a long session to music. the concept is not to have one all other activities revolve around one activity, but to dedicate more or less equal time to all of them. after i realized this and have become good at it, I have been the most prolific in years to the point that i could be ready to collect a bunch of songs into an album. but i've also been able to read more, run at least three times a week (last year i didn't even lift a finger in the name of physical activities, LOL), hang out with friends and family, mod my pedals, etc.

Downgrade your connection to dialup. You'll be so frustrated after checking your email all you will want to do is play with your gear.

it's not about the tools. stop hoping the right gear will help you and start focusing on finishing something. anything. then you'll find that you have a NEED for certain gear, instead of just a desire for it.
pick a DAW package or a sequencer and stick with it long enough to learn it inside and out. even if it's the wrong thing, you will be farther ahead than if you spend the next year trying to figure out which application is the best. the problem with all this great new gear is that the choices you're faced with make shopping an endless waste of time.

if you are addicted to internet, there may be a reason for this. ever thought about this 'what am I doing here checking webpages and email' concerning the RESULT? if you think about it, you come to a conclusion: that you probably would LIKE to be more present there: presenting tracks, communicating with bookers, whatever that pushes your output!
think about the internet as a tool, but do not overestimate it. you can give the people out there something from your art, if you PRESENT it there, then - if you get enough responses - you can much more easily sit back and relax, thinking about new things...
yes, quip is right - in my opinion - get some gigs, let people out there know who you are and what you do, then you'll get in 'balance' with the world out there...
just my 2 cents

if you have more fun on the internet than writing music, so what?
Is there a reason you NEED to finish a song? Are you on a contract? Are there club membership dues?
Do what you enjoy doing.
I dont enjoy being on the internet waiting for something to happen. . iit's just become a compulsion, something that I do without even thinking about it.
Astroid those tips sound really nice, not work - just setting limits to things so i dont just kind of go around mucking around with bits without putting it all together
and umami . . im not talking about needing the right tools . . i was before, but if you read my post youll see i just sold it all to simplify to nothing but a sampler/sequencer and a monosynth.
all others thanks for the ideas too .. . i dont have a 'studio' to separate from the rest of my living space but ill try and split things up a bit
