So I just received a used Sherman Filterbank yesterday and it's consumed all of my free time. I've been wanting one for ages and it's pretty much everything I've imagined and then some. It's raw, belligerent, fantastic, and inspiring.
There's a serious lack of decent quality demos of it around the web, so put these in your pipe. I'm just getting to grips with it and testing it out, so pardon the ridiculousness. The first two are pure sines run through it, and the third is the obligatory Daft Punk filter test. Not really all encompassing, but it gives you an idea. Enjoy

UPDATE:
Here is a more normal demo like colin was asking for, complete with narration. The first few are with no res and the rest are labeled as the res increases (at the end). Each sweep is 16 bars and is MIDI controlled. I'm pretty sure I had it set correctly at each point, but this is totally unscientific. I tried to find a happy medium in between overdriving it and having too low of a signal.
As you will notice it's pretty damn quirky, with weird noises/distortion present throughout (mostly at the top/bottom of the range). If you want a smooth filter it's probably not for you, but it seems to excel at extreme dirtification, squealing like a pig, and staccato madness.

Edit: I think I actually screwed up some of the settings on the last demo (on the 2 pole highpass takes), but whateva... you get the idea.

i agree on the lack of demos that are decent... any chance we could get a simple lowpass 0 res filtersweep over some disco?? i really wanted it for super simple stuff, but all i could find were blasting noise demo's out there.

Does anyone know of a kit for a nice rack mount filter? Something like the Oakley Filtrex link ? I contacted them but they're no longer selling PCB's.
I'd love a Sherman, but it's so $$$ ...

@ colin: no problem, I put something together after work.
@ adcBicycle: They are quite a bit cheaper if you shop around for a used one (seems to average about $200 less). Other than that, the only thing comparable would be a modular, which would be pricier. If you want nice and tame filtering the Akai Mcf42 seems to get good reviews (plus it's stereo, which is nice)

Yeah, ebay is a necessary evil. It took me a couple months to hunt one down, but I got a minty fresh one. The first editions come up sometimes too and seem to have less interest.

The rack ones are more rare and expensive used, but you can rack the desktop ones with the rack ears that come with it. Good luck...
They seem really pricey, but used I think it's totally worth it. I priced out a eurorack modular with similar features/character and everything I came up with was at least around $1000. You would need MIDI to CV, 2 12db dirty multimode filters, an adsr, an envelope follower, an vca with an ar env, a pitch follower, a lfo, etc. It would be a lot more versitile, but that stuff adds up.

Thanks for this. I now realize all these other demoes I've heard in the past have the resonance cranked to ridiculous levels. N9 said the output is noisy, do you find that to be true? I couldn't really tell.
Better than MS20 filters? All subjective I'm sure, but they definately have a nice edgy character.

I wouldn't say it's terribly noisy, but if you listen critically with headphones there seems to be some noises/tones coming from the triggering of the envelopes/lfo/etc (they're more apparent at some settings). It would be great not to have them, but I figure it goes with the territory. Also the output seems a little low for my tastes.
It's not really ideal for super pristine processing, but I can easily overlook it.
