take this with a grain of salt:
i'd rather have a modular, because what if, in a year, you decide you want another monosynth? if you had your modular set up, all you'd need to get is an oscillator. in addition to having your new awesome monosynth, you'd also have extra, unfathomable modulation power in your filter processor. i've been using my modular basically for bass and leads, but i decided about a week ago to plug my guitar into it. WTF sounds great, why didnt i do this before?
also, the other bonus is that, if you get tired of one filter, you can try another.
i still get gearlust, but having the modular has curbed it a lot, because i realize just how stupid it is to feel like i need another analog filter or monosynth.

f-u.
You had to go and use the term "unfathomable"... unfathomable modulation power... I hate you.
Everytime I read one of these blogs about modulars I get totally excited about getting one... and then I look into it, see how much it's going to be... and give up.
I think modular should be included in the banned word list.

"unfathomable"certainly ought to be auto-bannable.

That's a good point about getting a synth and effects unit in one for roughly the same cost. For me, it wouldn't be cost efficient since I don't really use synths in my music.

Good music involving expensive instruments should be bannable.

Yes, I agree. Good music from cheap instruments and crap music from expensive instruments should be the only allowable types.
