--> I'm curious what you all think is the most helpful comments that people can give you as far as improving your creative work. What do people say that you find helpful?

Personally, I appreciate when people tell me what works for them, what doesn't work for them, and when they are specific.

specifically what could be done to improve it. I also like brutal/close to insulting honesty, because I don't get that from anyone I know personally
...this reminds me, I need to post some stuff here to get torn to shreads.

Oooo, fibonacci sequence

i don't listen to other people's comments.
other people suck!

:P

I appreciate discussion and criticism about bigger things, ideas, directions etc. That sort of discussion inspires and interests me- its a motivator. I also like specific advice about mixes, but not composition.

criticising criticism is generally unhelpful

Poor construction; weak argument. Repetition is awk

yeah, It's hard to say. I think be best constructive comes from someone who is sensitive/perceptive and familiar with your music and your goals, and it can be about the most random shit--what I mean, is that good constructive criticism can be anything as long as it comes from someone who is paying attention and isn't a douchebag.

I really just like to observe people's physiological reactions.. if they start to vomit on themselves, that's generally a bad thing.. if they start to shit on themselves, then i consider the piece a success.

what if it's both, monk?
finding a good critic is tough. hang onto them, after putting their opinions in little glass jars.

if it were both, i'd prolly just take pictures and post it on astroid's myspace or somethign.

Nice golden rectangle, which i guess is also a good ratio between specific critiques of technique and subjective critiques of the general.

hearing how people criticize other artists' music is sometimes helpful, because they say things that they probably wouldn't say about your music in front of you, feraing they might hurt or dissappoint you.

for example some time ago i was talking to a friend of mine about a festival and he told me that after the event he hadn't heard even a simple melody line he could whistle on his way home". that got me thinking how music-less my music is.

monkvolcano: I think making a vomit inducing song would be kind of a feat in itself.

ok sorry for jking around in yer thread so much..

but really i think the most important thing i can get from somebdy after hearing a song, is just an honest, intelligent account of how it affected them. I may not neccesarily care, but it is interesting to get a perspective on how my work translates to other people.

if the critiqe gets over technical, that can be a turn off for me.

@linde: come to think of it.. i belive you are right.

i like when people explain to me how they 'feel' about a song, rather than technical tips.
i mean i'm very much interested in making nice recordings but i think im much more interested in peoples emotions and how they let them work.
