--> I love vinyl.
It stems from when I was a boombap beatjunkie and still had dreams of competing in the "I can dig deeper than thou" stakes.

Since then I've been warming up to cd's (no pun intended) while my interest in different genres grew.
Libraries are a great way of exploring unknown but not-so-new music. Libraries = mostly cd's. But cd's are the tapes of the 9ties, to me. They're great to have littered around the room, and you can personalize them, although I don't "paint" on my cd's the way I decorated my tapes.

So obviously I have mixed feelings towards mp3s. It's great that this way of distribution is out there, but Ill never be able to shell out 16 $ for a zip file.

Does your favourite music get cut on vinyl?
How do people here buy actual records? I know there are a few vinyl afficionados.
Is it even possible to find electronic music Lps?
Here in Ghent the best record store ever has called it a day.
So, I'd rather buy music in a real store than online, but if need be...
Turntablelab has a nice selection of downtempo and electronica, but I avoid shipping from overseas like the plague.
Anyone know of some great shop on the european mainland that ships international?
Help me out! :-)

Not really mainland europe but UK, has 3 good shops that do online:
link Smallfish - I was gutted when I found the shop had closed
link Boomkat - Ive bought various things from here and they package well and are swift. Good prices as well.
link Phonica - Good shop to visit with a good selection. Never brought online from them though.

I've been offered a vinyl player last year and I usually buy old stuff I already have on CD because I love vinyl covers basically and I love a different sound sometimes from my classic records
I like : link

Thanks zanf! Boomkat looks nice. Will definitely check out those three for their shipping rates.
If its too pricey, I can always do what I did at 16.
Take an overnight boat trip to scavenge London, fill my bag, and return in the evening.
:-)
Cheers!
Khoral - the sleeve is def a big reason for me too.
Loved this project from the dublab people.

Eh, nice pic...

:-) It's from the "up our sleeve" exhibition.

Anyone have experience with link ? Shops in the south would be even better, but hey.

Phonica, is that the new mr Bongo? or a neighbouring shop?

quit your whining

you should see how much shipping to australia is.

bb - Ive used record and tape exchange - you can pick up some stuff on the cheap but youll have to invest the hours cratedigging to find them.

If youre in London on a spree, drop me a line before you come then we'll hook up and break bread.
yeah vinylexchange is good. i only really check out the techno section though.
there are loads of record shops in manchester and the best (IMO) are all within a couple 100 meters or so around oldham street in the northern quarter.....makes for a nice chilled day of record shopping! you can always stop for lunch/beer in one of the little bars too
boomkat's outlet 'pelican neck' closed recently though and that was possibly my fave

The best part about vinyl is the large second hand market for dirt cheap out of print music. I remember about 5-10 years ago when I first got into records, I would go to the thrift store with $3 and get 30 records. These days, that gets me only an LP and a 45. I am trying SO hard to part with my vinyl, because it weighs so much and I have a cross country move coming up...but I don't know if I will be able to. Digitizing a record and titling the mp3s takes so much time that its not worth it. I wish there was a cheap service out there that would do that for me.

i love my collection of random vinyl. mainly bought from second hand shops and record fayres
ive never had much luck with proper record shops.
im too lazy to research anything like labels and artists.
i just pick up stuff that i get a good feeling from.

but im also getting tired of the feeling i have all this shit i need to find a place to store.

i love vinyl but don't buy it as much as i used to. partly because Ozone records closed and i used to go there for new stuff and partly because i've just slowed down on buying lately.. like the last 6 months.. just haven't wanted to go fumble through the bins. i'm sure that valley will turn into a hill soon though and i'll be back out looking for stuff or on discogs buying used or on boomkat looking for those limited pressings.

i'd like to release some vinyl sometime too. just a couple vinyl only releases. screw downloads and CD's and just put something out as a limited vinyl pressing.

i'm pretty settled in a house now and have some space for my vinyl to sit pretty so i'm at piece w/the "where will i store this crap" question. plus i built a shelf for it all that turned out pretty nice thank you ikea for the dimensions

i havent bought any records for (or any music) for 7 years (except maybe a couple of random charity shop things for 50p that were shit)
i think i need some new music (i dont really do any downloading either)
i hardly ever listen to anything although i still like my 1995-2000 record collection i rarely feel the need to hear the same old techno
im too poor for records- im too poor for anything really
i need a lazy persons job that pays well and requires no skills or experience

i <3 vinyl. i'm lucky that in tokyo there's a whole street lined with pokey little record stores selling everything from rare early electro to abstract modern electroninc compositions. but getting stuff online? what about juno records? link

I always miss comments when the sun shines on the other half of the planet
bla - kind of my feelings too, the largest part of my "collection" is music im not so into anymore
I remember from those years that you can dump a lot of money in this hobby without really trying
I think careful selection is key (holds wallet securely)

monty - I'm all for minimalism, you know, live light and such - a collection can be a weight
but then I go to a friends place in the country with a big room, big bookshelves, big everything
and its just nice, you can "walk over to" the records "bring it with you" and put it on
I dont have a lot of room though - one day perhaps
