--> Hi there, emers

I'm planning to start performing in Europe and having read Mapmap's post about Some Cats from Japan being amazing live, would love an idea of what it takes to get a reaction like that!

I'm a bit intimidated really by the whole live persona thing. I guess I can dance, but it's really oddball and floaty. That's probably the only way to describe it. And I think it's a little embarrassing perhaps. So if I don't jump around like a troubador will I still be able to stage a great show?

What will it take??? I have been practicing my singing a lot, so hopefully will be able to give a good vocal performance, but will that be enough?

If some of you could fill me in on things that have most impressed/moved you at shows I would be extremely appreciative.

LOL @ mlbot's posh banter...

my mate came on stage wearing a tabard made of fake grass, with a picket fence hung from his shoulders and a load of clothes pegs all over his (epic) beard. was well funny for a while but they had technical problems and generally fucked up the more important aspect (i.e. the music)...so it can be a fun gimmick if it fits but it's surely not a substitue for doing your thing well

(i want to wear my latex gimp mash on stage...but i get hot enough as it is and i can't face my grandma having to come to edinburgh to identify me - i don't want to know what she would make of me wearing that with a stricken look on my face and a circuit bent furby by my side...)

She'd probably say "I always knew he'd die this way"

what im going to wear for stfu edinburgh is definitely going to get in the way of the music but itll be alright i think- i dont have to do much while its playing - its not like i have to sing or anything

I would like to wear an outfit that makes me look like a newborn rabbit, really squirmy and blind, and actually kind of naked and gross. And start off the show with mist all around the floor and me lying in a fetal position. I will then sit up and will have big goggles that look like red dome eyes and I will sing my song Death of a Son which begins with the primordial bass and the lines: "who can find me here"....

have you ever seen Diamanda Galas?

you should wear a fredo costume, like with fake hair, mask, clothes, everything.

no, who is Diamanda Galas?

she's an avante-goth singer, her PLague Mass performance she does topless, drenched in blood... and then she oscillated between an operatically trained voice and insane glottal fry garbles run though several crazy Eventide harmonizer effects.
sounds absolutely awesome. I really like operatic excesses.

sounds like torture..

its a little from column A, a little from column B.

It was 'awesome' to see live, in the classical sense of the word.

nice nipples?

just barely related: I was listening to I Am the Walrus in headphones yesterday and came away with the following revelation:
Brilliantly scored/mixed by George Martin. I mean, truly inspired.
John Lennon has the quintessential rockstar voice. It's like a miracle, it's so strange and unique. Obviously David Bowie is in the same league, but something in his voice is tame compared to those bloody notes of John's.

I've been just getting into Ivor Cutler ... It sounds like he had an influence on some of John's "voices" he'd use.

i would say just enjoy it. thats what playing live is about. having fun. i have done some pretty duff shows. where no ones really into what we are doing. but i still have fun. if people see you having fun then they want in on the action too. so they join in and will listen and respond.

i just bought a smoke machine. actually my mates mum bought it for us. is this naff?
