--> Hi there, emers

I'm planning to start performing in Europe and having read Mapmap's post about Some Cats from Japan being amazing live, would love an idea of what it takes to get a reaction like that!

I'm a bit intimidated really by the whole live persona thing. I guess I can dance, but it's really oddball and floaty. That's probably the only way to describe it. And I think it's a little embarrassing perhaps. So if I don't jump around like a troubador will I still be able to stage a great show?

What will it take??? I have been practicing my singing a lot, so hopefully will be able to give a good vocal performance, but will that be enough?

If some of you could fill me in on things that have most impressed/moved you at shows I would be extremely appreciative.

quip said: "i just bought a smoke machine. actually my mates mum bought it for us. is this naff?"

not if you dress it up as a dragon or a smoking arse or something
are you bringing it to edinburgh?

that's inspiring, quip. thanks man. And yeah, I think a smoking ass sound grooby. ;)

Ivor Cutler huh...? He's like poetry, right?

I just finished an exhausting weekend of live shows at Austin City Limits festival. 2 shows stuck out in particular for me.... Regina Spektor, which was just her and her goofy/terribly cute/halfway shy but super charismatic self on stage with a piano and a mic. She'd laugh and sing comically out of her range...to the delight of the crowd... it wouldn't have worked without her loving every second of it too. At one point she also was playing piano with her left hand and hitting a wooden chair with a drumstick in her right hand, while singing, and it had a great effect. Lovely show. I smiled almost constantly, and I'd not really ever heard her music before.

The other was Arcade Fire.... Which was just balls-out amazing. Super-star production. Huge red curtain backdrop with black and white film projected on to it. Big tall menacing red neon poles across the stage. Violins, horns, members rotating around. A huge pipe organ that bellowed out chords along with the insanely intense chanting and wooing of the singers, which had the effect of feeling like you were at some dark, forbidden church.

The unifying thread between the two seemed to be... bare-naked honesty and confidence, turned up to 11, but coming from 2 completely different angles.

i think the smoke machine is coming to edinburgh. yes.

visuals are good too - heres a pic of me with mine:

what shows are you doing in the uk? would you like to play in leeds perhaps?

im with those who encourage you to stay natural... And i think LowLifi had some great points... Just let it evolve over time as apposed to figuring it out instantly. If you present your talent with class and honesty I say people have no choice but to honor that and enjoy it man! Definiltey for your passionate, beautiful music!
