--> after never touching my PC for anything but audio i decided today would be a good day to load an RTA app from allen and heath and do some tests in my studio as i think i have some low end/mid range issues and i need to resolve them.. if they exist. i found the allen and heath app after googling. 14 day trial.. should be all i ineed.

i install all seems well. however i can't seem to configure it to use my sound card as an input source instead of the crappy on board laptop mic. bummer. i uninstall it after deciding to find another way.

reboot my PC and now the whole thing is FUCKED. none of my apps will recognize ANY ASIO drivers. lol. great. i uninstall and reinstall latest drivers for my echo indigo and RME multiface. both cards i've had for a really really long time and never had any issue with. the RME has been especially un-fuckable and rock solid.

after doing everything short of a windows re-install i'm left w/a compy that hates all things asio and won't even access soundcards via the crappy direct sound drivers. boo fucking hoo.

what now? i already had the "safe mode" restart after a reboot and went thru that jibba jabba w/no luck. seems my ownly option is wiping this things drive and starting over. i guess it has been a few years since i've gone thru that but i was hoping to never do that again as windows OS installs are retarded and installing software on windows is equally retarded. i was hoping that by the time this laptop started to crap out that audiomulch would be OSX friendly and i could let this thing die while enroute to the apple store to buy a macbook.

whine whine whine. poor me and my "in 2.5 years of use i've never gioven you a problem until now" windows laptop.

so, don't install stupid little apps on your windows machine because it will fuck you up. fucking windows. fucking love hate audiomulch relationship.

if shakespeare were alive today he'd write a blog about tragic computer relationships.

rant over.

lets kill windows!! AHR

are there any ways to run windows apps on linux?

@ cc: link

i wonder if it's dell and not necessarily windows. i've heard of and dealt with alot of arbitrary computer problems lately, and they've all been on dells.

however, i found a couple interesting things that may or may not help as i'm not sure what your setup is:

1. (from a&h site) Q. I downloaded RTA but could not run it. The error it gave was "output device not found". What could be causing this?

A. The problem could be to do with your soundcard hardware, software or configuration. To run the RTA, you need simultaneous read and write access to the soundcard, which it appears your system is not able to provide. This may be due to the soundcard hardware itself, or simply the fact that the processor speed or other system resource is limiting this, causing this abnormal termination error which the system is not able to work around.

2. the only other version of RTA i saw was for windows 95/98. it's possible that xp drivers won't work with it?

i'm sure there are other apps that would work for what you're trying to accomplish. you could try it with ozone.

i've also found that voodoo incantations and foul language work very well for fixing windows issues. ;)

for the record:

i own a mac. have always owned a mac and always used logic. 8 years ago i got a free dell laptop PIII 850 and installed win2K pro on it and never used it for the net. it STILL works perfectly to this day but sadly became overwhelmed w/the one reason i own a windows machine which is audiomulch... my last 3 records were mostly composed in audiomulch then imported into logic for mixing.

so, the windows machine i have now i've had for 2.5 years and it's always worked pretty well w/the exception of the once in a while random "windows wants to start in safe mode for no apparent reason" or "oh no i put the mouse in the wrong USB port and now it doesn't work". the computer i'm using now is an athlon64 DTR 3800+ and it runs at 2.4 (i think) and is wicked fast even though it's more than 2 years old. i've only ever pushed it to about 60% even w/a really stupid packed audiomulch patch. i have the drive partitioned so all my shit's backed up. i just need to reinstall the OS and my apps... which will be a good time to trim the fat and get rid of crap i don't use.. then the thing will probably be great for another 2 years.. and MAYBE by then mulch will be native to OSX and i can ditch this windows bullshit completely and run mulch rewired into logic 8.1 (lol).

Please Ross.. make mulch for mac.

Have you already tried using System Restore to go back to your pre-allen and heath system?

BTW, some of those "optimize your PC for audio" sites encourage people to turn off system restore. Don't ever do this, unless you have some better imaging solution. I have fuxored my PC over and over, and system restore has always been there for me.

Of course, in the end I went back to Apple...
Recent blogs: AOL Data Release

and you might want to look into the asio4all drivers. they came with fl7 and they work great. any asio device i plug in just works. i'll try to find the install. i think it may even be a free dl somewhere.
i'm gonna try a few different things today and see if i cant sort it out. then.. when i'm just frustrated enough i'll turn on the monomachine and make angry music.

computers in general can be such a pain. i think my issues come from realizing how much i rely on my laptops for everything... music, paying bills, contacting friends, making travel arrangements. it gets to a point where i feel that i want certain parts of my life back....
then i realize that i sold my four track, i hate writing checks and am out of stamps...
oh well.

i use my old mac G4 for internet/office type stuff so i try to keep the music compy's off the web. it's helpful to have an old computer around.. one that's not worth selling and just using it for the net. throw a big external drive on it and put your music library there. it's less entagling. i can't imagine if i had to send email w/my evolver...

two computers are a must IMO.
1 for porn
1 for studio

lol one for studio and one for.
@highdropod: its not dell only. I build my own and was vulnerable to all the same system incompatibilities and problems with the Pentium 4 I built. The AMD I built is rockin' an MSI board that did real well.
The Asus ATI P4 combo I built was a real mistake.

WINE - i second that. there are some issues with Wine being slower than XP for running apps and some apps don't work.
however, I installed Ubuntu and wine was needed to test internet explorer (app called multiple-ie.exe that installs IE versions 3-6) for browser testing webpages. no problems there.

i agree with jdg. it's pretty damn hard to fuxxor over a computer not connected to the net (though with the state of many VSTs, one wonders). get one computer for personal use, tinkering, etc. then another computer for music. and don't ever connect your music computer to the intertubes. not only is it a waste of time when you're trying to get stuff done, your music computer will be much, much cleaner (and quicker!) without the urge to install every piece of trial software you come across. and without the distraction of everything else you use a computer for, you'll get more done, to boot.

try linux
