HAY GUYS.
I'm gonna be flying in to Portland to have a peek around- OCT 12-15. What should I see?
And whats this business about the shanghai tunnels? and Does the Tri-met run 24/7?
We're thinking about getting a week pass on the tri-met and just cruising around to see all the neighborhoods and maybe burbs, etc.
I want your ideas!

That sux...yeah, with Max, you should be pretty good to visit quite a few places. For southeast, you will probably want to transfer at 39th to the 75 - it goes crosstown to SE. For north portland, you can take the interstate Max Line. The trimet website (trimet.org) is actually pretty good about telling you where to transfer (and can even give you arrival times and such).
Definitely budget in some money for late night cabs just in case...

late night cabs might be a little pricey if you are going out near the airport.
is this where you're staying? sandy is a main artery into town so i'm sure there's plenty of bus options. the max will get ou right into town easy peasy.. or to NE portland as well.. but then you'll have to get on a bus to get over to the fun side of alberta.. though it's only a slightly inconvenient walk... well maybe more than just slightly.

if you are right on the max line then i'd skip the rental car unless you can find a wicked cheap deal. or maybe just rent one for a day or two so you can drive out to the columbia river gorge/multnomah falls.. it's only a 30 minute drive. if i'm in town when you're here i'll drive you there myself. i'm gonna be in friggin miami for a wedding. so it goes.
somebody drive them out to the falls.. he's trying to sell his wife on moving for christ's sake.

yeah +1 to skip the rental car since you're near the Max stop.
I love nearby there (more or less) so it'll be easy to hook up, although when are you coming? I'm out of town a bit during the next few weeks.
Roshi & Iggy shall we set up a thingy for all of us?

Erm, for some reason instead of "live nearby" I wrote "love nearby." Find whatever meaning you wish in that typo.

In answer to your question, the Shanghai Tunnels are a network of underground passages beneath part of old town that were once used to kidnap bar patrons through trap-doors that fell from bars into the tunnels (seriously, trap doors!). The men would then be drugged or simply imprisoned, and sold to sea captains as slave labor. It's all here, including contact info for tours: link I've been on the tour and it's pretty cool, but it's pretty dusty down there so that limited it's enjoyment.
Other strange, odd, or bewildering Portland attractions:
Woodstock Mystery Hole: link
Website contains all you need to know.
Velveteria: link
Museum of velvet paintings. If you come at the right time, they have a sweet naked-lady-black-light section!
Devil's Point Strip Club: link
Portland, so I've heard, has more strip clubs per capita than any other city in the U.S. I don't know if that's true, but this particular club has a bizzare and unique offering: Stripper-oake. Which, as the name implies, is a mix of stripping and karoake. In this version, would-be rockstars sing on stage while strippers gyrate against their legs, and do other hilarious/distracting things. I thought it was more fun than sleazy when I went.
Voodoo Doughnuts: link
They have some interesting selections...maple bars with bacon on them, penis shaped doughnuts filled with cream, etc.
Portland Pro Wrestling at Sandy Barr's Flea Market located at 7220 N Burlington.
You can google this one, last I heard they were still doing shows, although venerable Portland icon and wrestler Sandy Barr died earlier this year.
Keep Portland Weird!

Lol, Mystery Hole... never seen that.
Good eats eastside: Montage (gourmet mac and cheese with festive european-style seating)
Nikolas (mmmmmmedeteranean)
the Farm (on Burnside)
Tani's sushi and yakitorium (near the MNystery Hole, apparently)
Downtown: El Grillo (burrito joint right next to Mary's strip club downtown, kinda by Powells.)
