Ok, so the dates are revised now that I bought tickets:
I will now be arriving in PDX at about 10:00AM local time on Saturday, Oct. 13. I'll be leaving on the evening of the 16th.

don't waste yr time with the shanghai tunnels. the tour is a waste of money. if you've seen a dirty basement and have heard ghost stories, you've already done the tour. my best advice is to talk to people. any self respecting portlander will go off on you about how rad the city is with little or no coaxing. you'll probably find that the neighborhoods are not that different from any other city this size, and that it's the general vibe of the people and the surrounding nature bits that put the city on the top ten places to live in america lists... and possibly tom potter's near legendary girth.

I concur on Voodoo Doughnut being a must-see/eat. It's run by the guys from the X-Ray Cafe, a legendary Portland punk club.
Also agree that Shanghai Tunnels are overrated.
Mt. Tabor is at the end of Hawthorne Ave in SE and is a dormant volcano with a huge park on it that offers great views. Likewise, the Japanese Gardens (awesome) and the Rose Garden in Forest Park on the West Side also provide sweet vistas for hundreds of miles. Forest Park is the largest greenspace in a city in the USA and there are lots of trails.
The Tri Met stops running at around 1:30am I think (d'oh). I live out by the airport and it's not so bad, but hipsters from downtown never ever come out here, so it's got that going for it too. Seriously it's also got the best Mexican food.
I would also recomend renting a car or somehow getting out of town at least for a day. the mountains, rainforests, and coast are all within two hours' drive and are the most amazing things you'll ever see.

lol I love how the NYT has their head stuck up NY's ass.
But I wish they would stop telling people about portland, until after I've found a house to buy.
