What a load of bull!!! But what got me was:

"the Kaiser Chiefs and the Twang are amongst a host of bands queueing to have their music "poduced""

Queueing?? To add a bit more treble to a track? I hope theyre not paying for it.

Alas the degradation of music quality continues..
Recent blogs: R.I.P Tony Wilson

It sounds like a load of twaddle compressed into a press release, regurtiated verbatim by a mindless guardian hack.

Journos have a tendency to do this - I bet the guys behind the 'revolutionary' new idea decided over a pint to take the piss right out of a journalist they know.

We used to do that with the local press [and their music page] in a town I used to live in. Ive still got one cutting where I said our music had evolved so much after we had acquired African nose flutes.

I think this article means that the producers in question are too cheap to buy speakers, and they are mastering all their music with headphones and calling it a feature.

The only monitaurs you need nowadays are ipod earbuds

Monitaurs = Minotaur + Unicorn offspring.

The smell of steaming BS.

Also: i find it difficult to believe that motown tracks really sound subjectively louder than contemporary commercial masters, can anyone comment?

motown singles cut to vinyl where as hot as they come.
if u messure the "crest factor" (delta between peak and rms) im sure the motown stuff is louder. but the medium (vinyl) with no absolute ceiling.. the output distortion on peaks is analog, instead of digital (square waves) and we all know that speakers cannot play a sqaure wave.

BBC news carries the same story [almost verbatim] as the guardian and they have audio examples. if youlisten to them, all they have done is use the stereo field more in the "podbullshit" mix, like panning the drums to one side.

They have a classic quote on there to try and bamboozle ordinary folk: "I started thinking: Film quality 5.1 surround sound stereo is great but we've only got 2.0 ears - and most people now consume music like that.

That completely overlooks that 5.1 gives you more spatial information rather than needing more ears to hear it.

Sounds even more like complete bullshit to try create hype and make a name for themselves.

dood, who are their promo people.... cuz thats some serious good coverage for doing jack shit.

"poduction"

HAHA!

What idiots. Majority of people either don't hear the difference in heavily compressed mp3s or simply don't give a shit (I'm the latter), and certainly aren't going to enjoy their music any more thanks to more ear-bleeding loudness. I think modern mixes are loud enough, thank you!

i heard that motown singles were engineered to sound good on the tiny(pocket sized) transistor radios that were all the rage during that period. they had itty bitty speakers, but this was way before small speaker technology advanced, so they sounded tinny

Ben Wolff, one half of the Boilerhouse Boys, says the Gabrielle single has been given a boost in the higher frequencies to compensate.

end quote

ok just add more high end. That's the magic!

Instead of moaning about the state of modern music playback, does anyone know how we can go about educating people and making them aware that ipod earbuds and mobile telephones sound like shit?

bhahahhahaha oh man, im laughing on the outide...but crying on the inside.
