wave multiplier - what does it do?

From time to time I have heard of an analog synth module called a "Wave multiplier". Apparently it can add harmonics and otherwise fuck up the waveform. Nice, but that's it actually doing? My interest is to write on and add it to my existing Render Notes 5 software synth. I have googled to figure out the actual algorithm but have only concrete information that I have found are circuit diagrams (which are meaningless to me). Too bad, as I would really like to know what a wave multiplier actually does. Is it just a ring modulator, or something else?

scroll down to where it says analog waveshapers part 1 and 2, i've viewed lots of these lectures; and i remember he does a good job explaining the theory involved with it, and not just talking about the circuit. although he does give refernce to components and such, perhaps it would be good if you knew abit about schematics and what components do in them? but im not too sure how that relates to computer programming....

Interesting link - I just got a bit stressed seeing the homework due dates! (I haven't been in school for years)
Scroll past that bit quickly and you'll be fine.
I'm guessing blockhead wants a sort of practical description of what it does (ie - it amplifies 3rd order harmonics, and is useful for...)
Unfortunately I don't know the answer. I hope this isn't on the test. Gotta go study now...

yeah, just check out the videos down there. they're really informative, the ones on analog waveshapping should give alot of info about what it does... im stil in the process of re-downloading that one myself... so ill report back once ive watched it.

i think they're usually some combination of rectification (turns saw wave into triangle), wave-wrapping (doubles saw wave frequency), and wave-shaping (rounds corners on a triangle wave)

yeah, well, wave folding takes a waveform peak above a certain threshold and kind of inverts it...so say you have a triangle wave...and you set the threshold at i dunno... 1v or somethnig... once the triangle wave starts to go over 1v it actualy starts declining due to the wave folding...than once the input wave goes back down past 1v it starts as normal... it gets some intense harmonics. i dunno if that explanation helped.

Hey why haven't more people 'liked' this blog? This is exactly the kind of stuff I find interesting/useful.
Not that I mind being entertained, but learning feels more satisfying to me. anyone?
