looks like there are some really great news lying ahead. max/msp 5 is going to be released in Q1 in 2008. Great nice.
especially the time/sync support for vst plugins. yeah., been waiting for this quite a long time now.

it's definitely possible. i've never tried to do any kind of 'searching' with max, as in identifying transients. There are already some objects like bonk~ that would make it easier, but this wouldn't be a beginner project, although if you already have some programming experience you might could get it going pretty quickly.
