--> A simple documentation of the steps I took to get started using the K-14 scale for mixing in a home studio. I've read lots of enthusiastic reports about using this system so i'm giving it a try. YMMV.

As well as perhaps being useful for other people, I'm putting this up here to double check that I've understood the principle correctly. So if you see that I've done something strange please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

For background information on the K-system, and to find out what the fuss is about is see these pages:

no, someppl are great with just heafons.
me, im not one of those ppl.

me neither, sadly. i'm waiting for scion or somesuch to come out with a hatchback with izotope and t-racks installed in the dash. then i could just mix and master and commute at the same time with optimal SPL and i wouldn't bother my sleeping family or have to explain blowing junior's college fund on some adams and soundproofing the entire basement...

lol @ telepathy. I never asked myself 'does this look weird?'

zanf said: "So do you set the gain on the channel strips so it has none or do you balance it on the meters so that its -20dB? Does this take into consideration channel summing?"

Yes, channel gain is set to 0. Can you elaborate on the question about summing? do you have a particular situation in mind? Otherwise i think i'll grab the wrong end of the stick!
xlefr said: "It got noticed around places, it seems. Congrats. Fun stuff."

thanks!
dumafuji said: "so, maybe this dumb question...what if i mix on headphones primarily? i know i shouldn't. how can i figure out if 77 dB is coming out of my cans into my eustacians?"

I think it's a good question. jdg has the answer though. From what i've read it sounds like this kind of thing can't be done with h/phones.

i've got the same toy machine sweater, it's blue and over 7 years old

yeah! mine is about 9 years old, it's a super hard-wearing print :D

There's no option like 'i perved over this blog'

lolol. SPL meter lust!
