so i had a great little find in a junk shop the other day.a collection of 'The Great Musicians ' - a 48 record collection of the worlds greatest composeres.each record has 3-4 peices by the musician on a 10" and a booklet with history of him at the time of the peice and some music theory etc.the performances are from the Royal Symphony Orchestra in 1966.it's kinda over whelming,the artists included are
bach,
beethoven
berlioz,
brahms,
chabrier,
chopin,
corelli,
delibes,
dvorak,
franck,
grieg,
handel,
haydn,
mendelssohn,
monterverdi,
mozart,
pergolesi,
schubert,
tchaikovsky,
wagner,
i really wanna sample these records and use them with effects to make music or to add textures to music i have already done but i'm really ignorant about classical music.the first classical piece i ever really liked was beethoven's moonlight sonata '.
so im asking you guys to offer some songs i might like from these artists.
kinda music and mood i like are melancholic to sleepy,
bands like this i like are stars of the lid,arvo part, quite a bit of drone type stuff like william basinski,tim hecker,labradford, etc.
electronic stuff i really like is alvo noto,fennesz,four colour,growing,chihei hatakeyama.
as i said it's a bit overwhelming to have this much stuff to go through,all for £5.

Modern and / or contemporary "classical" music I've been enjoying much lately: György Ligeti, Kaija Saariaho and Toru Takemitsu. These composers sometimes work with a sort of dreamy aesthetic, sometimes almost drone. Check out Atmosphères and Lontano by Ligeti, pieces known among other things for their apperence in Kubrick flicks. In any case, very dense, almost static music, utilizing what Ligeti called sound-mass composition. Atmosphères for instance starts out with a tonal cluster that covers all 12 tones of the chromatic scale in 5 octaves! His works for piano are awesome as well.
Saariaho is a pretty young composer (well, in this context in any case, she's still alive and only a bit over 50) that I discovered just some weeks ago. Verblendungen for orchestra and electronics is stunning stuff. And Lohn for soprano and electronics is a beautiful, very dreamy and serene piece that I like a lot. By Takemitsu I would recommend "I hear the water dreaming", sort of modern impressionism.
Well, well, a lot of this contemporary stuff can be hard to swallow if you're not used to non-tonal music. If you like Pärt there are a few composer that work in the same field ("sacred minimalism" or something), Henryk Górecki of instance. From what I understand, his third symphony, the "symphony of sorrowful songs" was somewhat of a bestseller. Definitely tonal and melancholic. Also, there is a lot of early music that sounds somewhat like these composers (given that they work with methods derived from pre-baroque music). The Kronos Quartet has released a compilation with early music that should please any Pärt fan.
Otherwise, when it comes to classical music, i find myself listening most of all to Bach and Debussy.

Anyway, if you like dreamy and sleepy I recommend Debussy.
Oh, there's some Black Sheep in there too!

And oh, there's an album out there with remixes (sort of) of Debussy's "Prelude a l'pres-midi d'un faune" called "Replay Debussy". The quality is very mixed in my opinion, but some of the pieces are really good.
