long time no read em411 internet ghost people. howdy. hope you are all doing well.
i installed a firefox plugin called leechblock. it keeps me from spending time here, and elsewhere, when i should be learning and working. i've already progressed so much i feel kind of like george costanza on seinfeld - you know, that episode where he gave up sex and became a genius.
i've unplugged the internetz @ home. i'm hanging clothes out to dry. i'm going to grow a garden in the spring. i've sold all my gear. i put the laptop on a shelf (but no i haven't sold it, yet). i've unplugged the tv. going green and minimalistic is fun! just say no to consumerism.

we have one of those crazy home theater setups. one day i just noticed that's all i did in the evenings anymore. too tired after work to do much else. fuck that. i need to live life instead of watching other people live theirs. to paraphrase something i read - "ever watch a movie where the characters are sitting around watching tv? no, because that would make a boring story - the story of my life." netflix will suck away your time. gonna sell all that junk and get a simple radio that also hooks up to the ipod.

when i sell all that stuff i'm adding the money to a trip fund to go to egypt this spring.
i want to learn to play chess. i want to cook, learn spanish, learn to draw, read more, etc.
been backpacking a lot. been doing that for a few years, but really getting into the ultralight backpacking these days. no more 45lb pack up and down mountains. strictly sub 15lbs from now on. makes the trip a lot more fun when you can breathe and walk uphill at the same time.

boom chicka boom boom drums and mellotron just wasn't cutting it anymore. (also on a side note: i haven't sold 1 single song. i think maybe 20 free songs have been downloaded. that should give me a big fucking clue.)
taking a new direction. i bought a classical guitar. i've been learning how to read music and play classical-style for about a month now. i practice an hour to two hours every day after work. tough, but i'm hanging in there. it's something i've always wanted to do. i've already vowed to not buy an electric until i've learned how to read music and played classical for a year. i would get into trouble buying pedals and fx. i'm a recovering gadget-aholic don't you know?
i think i will probably end up doing fennesz, stars of the lid, dead texan, and tim hecker style ambient with guitar eventually, but for now i'm keeping it simple and building a solid musical foundation.
i'm doing yoga and meditating everyday for a couple months now. best damn thing i ever did for myself. i highly recommend it.
at work i am rabidly devouring everything about xhtml, css, php, usability and accessibility, etc. that i can get my hands on. i need to kick my career into overdrive. cut the fat, get lean and mean, specialize.
i think this is the most i have ever written about myself in one sitting. i feel like an egomaniac now.
so, what have you been up to?

timmo, wow, i haven't gotten that far yet. i have seen the ray jardine site and read some reviews of the ray way book, but there are no copies available in print. some used, but they are expensive. i like some of his ideas. i especially like the quilt idea, because that's the only way i ever use my sleeping bag anyway. i'm too big, and claustrophobic, to zip up the mummy bag, hehe. i recently got a henry shires tarptent - the squall 2. i'm going to try it out tomorrow on the AT!

i might have to get into making my own gear. seems very cool. and as you know there are tons of plans out there on the net. you go to backpackinglight.com?
outdoor stuff and em are kind of a weird pairing, but then again look at boards of canada, they're pretty big into the nature worship themselves.
yeah, let's hike a trail sometime. if you're ever down here, the AT is not too far away.

That tarptent looks really nice. I got the kits from Ray Jardine, it seemed like the easiest way to get the fabric and so on.
Here is the tent/tarp: link
It is a bit more open than one might expect and a bit low to the ground, so it is hard to sit up in the tent part, the tarp is great though.
Here is my pack the first time I used it: link
I don't know what it weighed but it sure was awesome. I could still drop quite a few pounds with a different stove, no chair, different sleeping pad, etc. but I like to be comfortable too when I'm done walking not just while I'm walking. Anyway, watch out for those trees, I know how they like folks in the east.

timmo, that stuff looks great! you are quite the gear maker. great scenery in oregon - what a nice looking campsite. any bear worries in oregon?
lilt, ha. nope, just still working out that quarter-life crisis you know.
room, i'm not going anywhere. this isn't one of those "i'm leaving. goodbye. i'm really leaving this time. seriously..." kind of posts. i just won't be making as much em for a while i guess.
tylth, ha! yeah regular radio sucks arse. but we have a pretty damn good college radio station here and npr is nice. i like a few shows on there. mainly will be speakers for the ipod.

How did that tarptent work out? And hopefully you had a good trip in general.
As far as bears in Oregon, I'm sure they are all around, but I always, always hang my food. I've never seen a bear in the wilderness, only when driving. You really got to watch out for Bigfoot though, that thing gets into your stuff like you wouldn't believe.
