A close friend of mine have severe G.A.S. and I don't know how to help him!? He just makes jokes when I try to talk to him about it. The other day he called me about an ad for an Akai S1000 keyboard version. Those of you old enough know that this thing is huge as a dinner table and that compared to almost any computer based sampler it's not that extraordinary. (It was excellent 15 years ago though)
My friend have been like this as long as I have known him (+10 years). I think he has owned (and sold of course) almost every electronic instrument known to man. Not a Roland system 100 but that is only because he never managed to save up enough money.
I don't need to comment on his chances of ever getting a GF or the fact that he hasn't made a song in more than five years.
It's so sad and I feel sorry for him...

GAS is Gear ACQUISITION Syndrome, not Gear Addiction Syndrome... it's not so much that you're addicted to gear, it's that your lust for new gear is unmitigatable.

I worry that I have this... not that I have much gear at all, but my rate of gear acquisition to output produced is terrible, terrible, terrible.

i think i suffer from gas --:P
but going back to being a broke student and moving to a new town with the sole intention of finding people to make weird projects with is my step in the right direction
though -- i should have fucking bought that sherman filter .. i should have .. and i didnt .. i should have .. and i will regret it until i get it :P

we should start a new economic system based on music gear.

My GAS is slowly fading away and now I'm thinking about selling some things, not to get funds for new things but perhaps to gain a little focus. My room and my brain still stink from all the GAS.

You know these people that are afraid to drink more than two pints because they're afraid there's no stopping after that?
Im like that with gear. Ive never bought lots of stuff, but I ve had my eye on a LOT.
Ive had an obsesion with snes games, b&o stuff, oldschool macs, records, vintage design, synths...
I almost always stop before Ive even started collecting. Thank god Im poor.
Years later I often stumble on pictures I saved, and think what did I ever see in this?

I generally...always have GAS... but I weed through all the machines and keep what truly inspires me. Then I use that gear to make music. I think, as long as you are making music, it is fine.

agree! problem with my friend is that he is not making any tunes, it's just "look at this thing, look at that new gear, ads, buy, sell" etc etc ... and it's not that he's not capable. he is. he have done tracks in the past and i know he would like to again, but he's just stuck. the only thing good about it is that i can use him as a warning example to myself when i tend to circle around the buy-button on some music stores web site.
