The online backup idea is good, but if you want to keep it local, a large capacity FlashROM might work as a temporary until you collect enough to fit on a CDR, then 6 full CDR's to a DVDR. This process is still well worth the cost once the filled CDR's are no longer of use, IMO, or you could just get a 4 GB FlashROM for convenience if cost isn't a concern. I'm admittedly a bit obsessive about backups, but this blog alone is enough to make anyone act as such.

Screw the cleansing rationale, someday you may want to revisit your work for whatever reason, and some types of data files save you hours of work when used as templates. It's better to have had the choice of what to keep and what to throw out.

online backups sound like a very good idea, except that I don't relish uploading 200 GB every once and a while. Takes long enough to copy that much data across USB...

I have two external backup drives but don't use them often enough. Going to solve that tonight.

tantan: the mozy thing does incremental backups while you're away from your computer so its quite convenient (it's just the initial upload takes a long time) inc ase that sways you.

cbit - that sounds pretty sweet, actually. Thanks.

Don't look back lilt

back up back up back up
in everyway possible... then back up your back up!!!

i had actually been doing really well... cos its a brand new laptop
had two dubstep tracks about an hour from being completely finished and had half a dozen hip hop beats for my brother

i have never worked that streamlined!!! no noodlings, no waste

oh well... as has been mentioned, i remember most of how it went and im sure i can improve upon it next time

it was just a good 80 plus hours worth of work =(

much love to you all!

(my new asus laptop actually came with a free back up service, it takes a snapshot of your harddrive, like an iso of a cd which you can then restore by reinstalling the offical asus vista recovery disk then just clicking the button and choosing which backup you want to install)

The fear is GOOD! It makes you back up your stuff!

I like to use GMail to back up stuff. Also, I have a Subversion repository for my Buzz songs, they're quite small.

exactly what i posted the blog!!!

Has anyone used Amazon S3? It's on a sliding scale too so you only pay for the space/bandwidth you use. Pretty cheap. I might give it a shot.

I thought Mozy was cool but I've heard mixed things about it. It's also affordable but it requires an application to login, so if you're computer crashes and you need a backup it's kind of a pain to access your data.

Somewhat related, here's a video on repairing a damaged CD with a microwave.

mixetape: a guy i work with is using s3 for a web app we're developing, storing lots of stuff on there (user files, not backups), its working well so far.

good to hear. i definitely want to try them out. thanks t.

yes backup often and use multiple backup media.
distribute your backup media to your friends or family. so your data might be safe in case of fire etc.
