hey freak folks,
i am currently redesigning my netlabel (beatismurder.com) and decided to make it cms based.
so far i tried Joomla and Phpwcms, but none of them could really satisfy me.
i don't really know why i didn't like joomla... i just didn't like it. just a feeling.
phpwcms is cool. i managed to make a really cool structure for my website.
but jeeeebus, the documentation is ridiculous. there are like 2 websites that have some info about it. and the only forum a bout phpwcms is obviously for advanced users only.
it took me 5(!) days to understand the basics of this cms. and now i wasted a lot of time and i'm still far away from really getting it.
so, dudes, what's your weapon of choice?
i mean, there are about 300 different cms out there.
any suggestions?
i don't want to make a message board and i don'T want to make a blog. i wanna make a netlabel. any ideas?
thaaaanks mangs.

isn't wordpress only for blogs?"
look at this and tell me if you still think that wordpress is only for blogs. I dont know who did frn's site but they have serious skillz.
If you know php then why not use a framework like cakePHP instead of a CMS? Theres loads at phpclasses.org to add pre-scripted functionality.

cmsmadesimple is really simple and flexible. it's easy to customize. Drupal is awesome too ! but it's really web 2.0 community oriented.

link CMS matrix. I surf this once in a while.
Does your server have Fantastico? within there are online shops, shopping carts, bulletin boards, etc. You may hate the idea. I have found that if I can tie the databases together from different bits, I can manage a site without going crazy and without programming the whole thing from beginning to end. Most successful electronics sites I'm seeing now use a forum, shopping cart and a common (or not) login. Works fine.
I like wordpress for what it is: expanding modular blog software. I also like WorpressMu (multi-user), Typo, Movable Type. I'm not picky.
I like Drupal for what it is: a community of really fascinating geeky people who really believe the secret to the next world is in the module they built to activate their toaster at home or flip a light on in the dorms. There are tons of useful plugins/modules for audio/video etc. as well.
Drupal helped my PHP code library and thinking about Object-Oriented stuff. DerekSivers from CDbabby and his trauma with Ruby on Rails has made me glad I picked PHP and learned MVC (model, view controller) style of coding. It has nothing to do with design, but seems to be a great learning tool.
Wordpress might teach you some things about PHP randomly but in my opinion, Expression Engine set me back for at least six months in my coding life. Loathing feeling in throat must stop typing.

PHP jobs in Portland: 100 ( whole world: link 17,000 hits )
Expression Engine jobs: ZERO (whole world link 157 hits )
Ruby on Rails: 8 (1920 hits link GO RAILS!)
PHP $0 // RoR $0 // Expression Engine: $ 99-250 link for starters.
For my application, I needed these: link and ended up writing my own. After months of time lost.

"RoR $0"
Yes rails is free. But server costs are worth considering. RoR apps, if they need to handle a decent amount of traffic, should be allocated a bunch of dedicated memory for mongrel instances. So the server costs end up higher than for an equivalent php app. (but rails is much nicer to work with. ymmv).

Dude, did you bother to even look at the link you provided? Do you see that free version there? That means $0. Also, the other link you provided was a link to a site that offers a few free modules/plugins made specifically for ExpressionEngine. So what? It just means you can customize it further with 3rd party plugins, modules and extensions which are also free.
And frankly, I don't think you knew what you were doing with ExpressionEngine. I mentioned I'll probably be using it with the mixit site and you rushed out and bought it for yourself in the great "mixit race". It's a CMS and a great one at that.
No I don't work for them, but I do at least one EE site a month and I use it for two of my own sites (personal and work).

whenever anyone brings up a new toy or language i do try it.
your bias towards it does not reflect the general bias towards websites and how-to.
my bias is playing piano. i personally don't care what language i speak or code in. PHP seems very useful as a suggestion.
have a nice day.

I've used quite a few CMS's and I'm speaking from a professional point of few. So I'm making an informed suggestion myself. My "bias" comes from experience.
Anyway, good luck astroboy. As I said earlier if you need any help ask away.

Sorry, I take offense to that. It's not a bias it's actual paying work in which I learned of and grew to love using ExpressionEngine cause it's made my life easier. I've yet to see your work portfolio.
I'm not here to argue with you but I'm just gonna call your bs.
