I've always had a love/hate relationship with Ableton's Impulse drum unit: I love the versatility regarding control of every sample, but I hate being limited to only 8 samples.

This new Instrument Rack fixes that problem for me, giving me nine Impulse units grouped into one track. All white notes from C-1 to B7 can now be mapped to any sample you wish to load up (in the interests of compatibility, etc., I've loaded it up with standard Ableton drum kits), and an array of Pitch controllers route the MIDI signals to the proper samples.

Share & enjoy. I came up with the idea in the shower the other day, but I don't have time to actually make any music with it at the moment, so it's up to you to take my idea and use it for something good.

Email me at steve AT NOSPAM stevechatterton.com if you actually use it in a track. Thanks.

thanks 1t11, I appreciate it. I was going to use a combination of battery and impulse...but hell, I might just use impulse ;o)

I should really invent a line of water-proof music gear that could be used in the bathroom.

Thats where all my best music ideas occur. Why wait 'til your done with your business to implement these ideas when you can use:

Dr. Mlbots patented sealed-electronica-gadgets!! Tub-safe! Non-toxic! Battery-operated!

i had an idea to make electric wheel motors that would fit on any car. each would only have to handle 1/4 the power needs. the engine of the vehicle could be replaced with batteries.

then everyone could convert to electric zero emissions regardless of the car they drive. the car would just have to have wheels. which i think they all do.

Instead of cars, we could all ride carnotcycles to work

i had this idea once to build a vehicle whose wheels would be powered by our legs, perhaps via pedals. we'd have to get rid of the body of the vehicle and just use a frame to cut down on weight, but i really think it would work! also, thanks to the gyroscopic effect, it would work with only two wheels instead of four, making it even easier to power.
just a dream, though. just a dream.

awesome idea, thank for sharing.

i had this dream once that i could take a shower in a car that would be powered by the water in which i showered, with some sort of micro-hydroelectric generator at the drain & a pump to a purification system in the trunk. of course, we'd all have to drive naked & constantly shower to pull it off, but it would solve the energy crisis.

I had the idea for a dildo/vibrator that you plugged into your phone so your lover could pleasure you long distance using touch tone dialing.

I called it the phonicator.

Sadly, the internet happened and has probably decimated my potential sales
goodpost+1 i will try this out.

yeah it's alll about the internet and wifi

i cannot test it now, but it seems i use the same tecnique... i use to put two impulse in an instrument rack and then use midi pitch plugin to extend the range of usable midi input for the impulses (for one impluse recognizes only one octave range)
what bugs me about this workaround is that you have to switch to different views to adjust the samples, so in the end the more "impulses" you have in a single instrument rack, the more the interface gets confusing. and, if i'm correct, you lose the ability to see what sample corresponds to which note.

i'm curious to see how you managed to deal with this. thanks for sharing.
Recent blogs: first blog!

I've been toying with the Live 7 beat, and the drum racks are pretty nice, a very flexible system, where you can basically drop anything in a 'pad'.
You can built these giant kits, and it still is pretty easy to manage.

@pierlu001: you're right, you can't see which sample is mapped to which key. i click on the audition headphones so i can hear what's what

@bodo: there's a Live7 now? actually, i think i heard that, around the same time Reason4 came out. i'll have to check that out someday, but i can't justify the $$$ or time right now.

can't you see where the samples are mapped by looking at the key split window in the instrument racks?

yes, but it won't tell you what sample is mapped to which key, the way you can typically see it in clip view when using impulse the old fashioned way.
