I've been entertaining myself with Processing lately, building some pretty basic generative stuff.
The nice thing with Processing is that you get all the basic plumbing for free, such as OpenGL and 2D primitives, FFT processing (via ESS, an external library) etc, yet you can still write normal Java code to interface with the 2D/3D canvas.
The picture is from a sound-reactive "music video" thingy I've written for my latest track. 100MB or so Java applet. See a work in progress version here. Oh, and it uses OpenGL so if your video card doesn't accelerate OpenGL it'll probably eat all CPU in sight.

Has anyone else used Processing?

moew indeed! jack: not sure what you mean by generic looking random stuff? processing can be used to produce very varied results (see demos included with the programme) but i choose to use a mixture of techiniques / programmes (see list above) to try to harness thier individual strengths. i'm afraid generic random stuff doesn't make much sense to me as random stuff is so varied - from william latham to joshua davis and beyond

jack123: It's definitely possible, which doesn't mean that it's easy. It's easier to make generic looking random wankery.
An example of nonrandom nonwankery: link
To me it's alot like what the demo scene used to be like, but a different set of people. More designers, less coders.

I made some bubbles. They drift gently up the screen, and if I wave my wii controller I can swoosh them around a bit.

sorry, should have explained a little more.
what I meant was that in most of the demos that I've seen there are only little squiggles dancing around on a single color background, kind of like the background visuals that play on iTunes or windows mediaplayer. basically I'm wondering if I should bother learning processing.
