I've been slowly getting back into post rock bands and been less interested in electronic stuff lately. However, after years and years of not keeping up with it, I'm totally lost in a sea of hipsterdom...how will people ever think I'm cool? ;) There are so many new groups out there and I'm sick of scouring myspace for samples of random groups who usually end up sucking.
Some bands I've been into are (in no particular order):
red sparowes
daturah
do make say think
mogwai
shalabi effect
mono
sigur ros
explosions in the sky
envy
the evpatoria report
tortoise
Any suggestions for other stuff in this vein that I should check out? I'm starting to feel like that old guy who's out of touch with contemporary music.
Also, I've been totally bored out of my skull recently. The prospect of sitting around in my apartment and tinkering on my laptop has finally lost it's charm. If anyone is in the NYC/brooklyn area and feels like dorking out over a coffee/beer or catching a show sometime, hit me up. | |

i've been revisiting my labradford collection. and been getting into port blue. what's the 'difference' between post-rock and shoegaze? level of experimentalism?

chimp - they seem pretty similar to me. I guess I tend to think of post-rock as getting heavier when called for, sometimes downright dirgy and bordering on metal, whereas Shoegazer is more consistently sad and drifty, with lots of delayed chords.

The main difference is about 20 years, really.
But there is also a difference, generally, in the vocals. Shoegazer wasn't so emo, and not often quite so instrumental.

ad - I've heard people credit Godspeed with it, as well, but like anything I'm sure it's much more complete history with many contributors "back in the day." Swans come to mind.
