--> I've been slowly getting back into post rock bands and been less interested in electronic stuff lately. However, after years and years of not keeping up with it, I'm totally lost in a sea of hipsterdom...how will people ever think I'm cool? ;) There are so many new groups out there and I'm sick of scouring myspace for samples of random groups who usually end up sucking.

Some bands I've been into are (in no particular order):
red sparowes
daturah
do make say think
mogwai
shalabi effect
mono
sigur ros
explosions in the sky
envy
the evpatoria report
tortoise

Any suggestions for other stuff in this vein that I should check out? I'm starting to feel like that old guy who's out of touch with contemporary music.

Also, I've been totally bored out of my skull recently. The prospect of sitting around in my apartment and tinkering on my laptop has finally lost it's charm. If anyone is in the NYC/brooklyn area and feels like dorking out over a coffee/beer or catching a show sometime, hit me up.

WHAT?! A friend of yours is doing vocals for shalabi effect?! They haven't released anything since like 2005...does this mean a new album is in store?

I enjoy quite a bit these bands, which maybe are similar to what you might like, in no particular order:
We're From Japan
Jakob
The Black Eyes
HDU
Lymbyc Systym

remind me not to be honest about my asthetic again.

By the way, both of those bands evolved from Smart Went Crazy which was a part of the origional change from DC punk to a post punk movement...

sorry to have brought up such a shallow subject. It doesnt pay to ask a question here. And I have been into them for years. Since about 1997, which was the last year of faraquet. I agree that they sound alot like many bands of the era.

Was just asking. Dare I ask if anyone likes Mice Parade?

I don't think American Analog Set has been mentioned yet...

whoa dude! ask questions and bring up shallow subjects for sure. at least I appreciate the name drops and I'm sure other people do too.

don't take it so personally. everyone has their own tastes/experiences... i was just sharing mine.

well then that totally explains it. they sound like other bands of that era because they are form that era and a lot of bands sounded like that then.

dunno about classifications but here are some name drop bombs:

don caballero (american don.. so nice to see that mentioned)
battles EPS (eff Atlas due to too many vocalizations, but it totally has some great moments)
smart went crazy, beauty pill, medications (was faraquet.. 2 of 3 members/ and i think theyre both fucking great)
jawbox, burning airlines, channels (j. robbins = great songwriter)
DISMEMBERMENT PLAN! (i also dont mind Maritime, thats where the bassplayer of thedismrmbpln went)

in fact, pretty much everything on epitonic.com In its prime (so said its dead)
and id like to express my hatred for such good music being lumped in with this hipster bullshit.

though i'm fashion agnostic, i must admit that the skinny pants brigade have really killed the music, much more than thick black glasses.

sorry, it is sam shalabi together with adam frank.
it'S called overpass!

so no real shalabi effect

There's quite a few "post-rock" whatever that means kicking around Australia at the moment. one of the better ones is Laura : link
There's also Jakob from Kiwi land : link

Dirty three is also from Australia I think. I haven't made my mind up about the full band yet, but there is a violin trio piece they did that is pretty rocking.

I mention hipsters because
A) I'm starting to admit to myself that even though I don't wear skinny pants or derby hats, I think that I at least dabble in hipsterism. I make fun of them a lot in part because I'm afraid I might be one.
B) Unfortunately a lot of other people who listen to these bands are hipsters or hipster affiliates.
C) I'm making fun of myself for actively searching out more bands that are classified under a term like "post rock".

thanks for the heads up yghartsyrt! I didn't know sam shalabi had another project.

what is a hipster affiliate?
