--> I've been slowly getting back into post rock bands and been less interested in electronic stuff lately. However, after years and years of not keeping up with it, I'm totally lost in a sea of hipsterdom...how will people ever think I'm cool? ;) There are so many new groups out there and I'm sick of scouring myspace for samples of random groups who usually end up sucking.

Some bands I've been into are (in no particular order):
red sparowes
daturah
do make say think
mogwai
shalabi effect
mono
sigur ros
explosions in the sky
envy
the evpatoria report
tortoise

Any suggestions for other stuff in this vein that I should check out? I'm starting to feel like that old guy who's out of touch with contemporary music.

Also, I've been totally bored out of my skull recently. The prospect of sitting around in my apartment and tinkering on my laptop has finally lost it's charm. If anyone is in the NYC/brooklyn area and feels like dorking out over a coffee/beer or catching a show sometime, hit me up.

I hate hate hate the term "post-rock" and I believe them (and many others) don't really need to be labeled that. however I'm lumping ASMZ i nthere anyway because fans of the "others" usually get into them, and they are usually associated to the scene

i'd really love it if hipsters would just go a little further back in time and pick up on this as a fashion -

some good ole gene kelly pants. If they learn how to tapdance in a group, it'd be a big plus!
Recent blogs: Japan tokyo, kyoto, hokkaido

OMG! the last girl I dated, who was at least as hip as me, had a pair of jeans that looked exactly like that. High waist and all. She was really cute, but good lord...those pants = no good.

For some reason I've had trouble getting into godspeed and silver mt zion and fly pan am and whatever other derivative projects there are. I get kind of bored with their music. I'd probably like silver mt. zion a lot more if they didn't read so much bloody poetry over their tunes.

The whitest boy alive.
the liars
uhhhh....the dirty projectors?

I think Explosions in the Sky are a bit boring.
I've seen Do Make Say Think and A Silver Mt Zion live and I love them both.
Godspeed! You Black Emperor are ace too.

"I think Explosions in the Sky are a bit boring" ---- I don't know that band .. but the sentence made me grin.

I can't think of new bands .. so I'll suggest The Wipers if you missed them the first time. Youth of America is an amazing EP.

timmo - your recommendations just left me like fifty bucks poorer!
