--> Today at work, I had to see one of the directors to give him a walkthrough of how to use wireless on his laptop and the remote access system. While I was waiting for him I engaged his PA in conversation.

She has a Greek surname and so asked about what the weather would be like there over christmas, as Im planning to go away to either there or somewhere else warm, instead of staying in London and being cold.

She asked why I was going to go away for christmas, I replied that it was because I dont celebrate christmas and want to go elsewhere for the period.

As soon as I said this, she exclaimed, "you miserable git!".

I took offence at this. Just because I dont celebrate a religious holiday [if you didnt know, Im an Atheist], doesnt instantly make me 'miserable'. Me, being the sarcastic fucker that I am and also that she mentioned she had religious leanings, went on to explain that I dont have any kids [people always say "christmas is for the kids innit?"] and that religion is a load of empty superstitious nonsense and being atheist, why should I celebrate it?

She replied aghast that I should respect her views and her religion but showed little respect for my belief system.

I am never miserable over christmas despite it being the time of year when my mum died or that its some long dead d00ds supposed birthday.

I dont celebrate it after years of suffering a really stressful as a kid, at home with all my fellow siblings and parents and got to a point where I asked myself why we did it every year being stuck around each other for about a week, stressed to fuck, for no real discernable reason.

Previous years I have helped out with a charity event that gathers all the 'meals on wheels' old folks and people with learning disabilities and puts on 'a bit of a spread' for them at a local college hall. I dont sit indoors being miserable or shouting humbug to people from my balcony.

How dare someone prejudge me according to their belief system because I dont 'play along' with theirs. I get the same shit because I havent eaten meat for nearly 20 years and most peoples instant response to my informing them that i dont follow football is, "What? Are you gay or something?"

I have to agree with what cbit said on a previous blog about that you cannot respect everyones viewpoint, especially when they are prepared to make snap judgements because you do, or dont do, something.

I think its worse because they make instant associations that are quite spurious when I express about a lifestyle choice I have made.

I think its also because Im a bit upset as one of guys I work with that is pretty much my best friend, is leaving to live in Latvia with his GF. Also, my performance manager is going back to Australia after being in the UK for 6 years and its these 2 that I work with the most and quite closely as well.

So it looks like Im going to be looking for another job as the person most likely to take over the Aussie girls job is, to put it bluntly, a glory seeking power crazed cunt but thats the world of corporate for you. The money is not good enough and despite saying that I want a payrise, my company is not forthcoming with an offer of an increase. Im actually earning £2/hour less than I was 10 years ago and to top it, the fares on my train line are going to be subject to a 14.5% increase in January.

Bah, humbug!

So, are you non-religious and go along with the trappings of the festive season or do you do your own thing? If so, what do you do?

I like to give gifts at random .. multiple times a year... mostly in the fall for some reason.."

Same same. I hate the contrivance of it all, especially as most people are stressed to fuck and see only this time of year is the 'season to be jolly...tra la la la la, la la la la'.

In the end ... I do still wonder if it's a flaw in my character. I think it means that I'm manipulative and controlling.. because anything contrived totally pisses me off.

It makes me wonder if I'll just crack someday at something really small... like a 50 year old man yelling "Yeah BABY!!" or something from a stupid movie and I punch him out and get arrested.

djugel - LOL @ yeah baby violence

it's funny because it's true, I get blue in the face at that

im looking forward to the xmas night out with my workmates.

last years one was funny.
we started arguing in a train station and the police had to break it up.

i dont want to sound like Charles Dickens, but i work in mental health, and spend my week working with people who have no friends, family, sanity...
its fucking depressing
so i like to take advantage and get pissed with as many of my friends as possible, and stuff my sentimental face with pies.

My guess is greece. where's jetsom?

Come to Australia. Everybody has barbeques and salads and its nearly always hot and sunny. People don't go caroling or go on about the Miracle of Christmas or Baby Jesus or whatever.
What I hate about it isnt any of that its the mindless consumerism. Apparently inflation and interest rates are rising again after Christmas. Yeah why would that be. Stop spending!
For those of us that don't bother Chinatown is always open.

i love christmas, and not at all for any religious reason. i pretty much treat it like 11t1, it's for taking some time to relax and hang with friends and family.

and admit it, you are a miserable git.
I am now. ;)

here's some chrissy cheer.

don't take crap from these ppl, stick a pin in her monitor cables.

some peoples get in the simple routine of holidays and over a lifetime can't find their own identity and why they even celebrate the things. i don't like how america goes all out for christmas and blows off easter( the greater of the two(religiously) ). i sometimes wonder how much longer the whole thing will go on. people like persians, indians and egyptians had their holidays be popular for tens of thousands of years before christians, so i figure were in this christmas thing out for another 8000 years and its finally over with.

a midwinter party has always been a good idea

saying "religion is a load of empty superstitious nonsense" is a bit of snap judgement on your part, no?

If you read the blog, I said that sarcastically AFTER she has made aspersions and preconceptions about me.

Now thats what the festival around this time of year was originally about - it was a feast so people ate plenty to survive the harsh winter. Just as the harvest festival was about sharing abundance with those who had nothing or were incapable of bringing in a harvest.
