A couple of weeks ago me and Lou went on a Transcendental Meditation course.
It's basically a way of meditating that's really easy to do: doesn't involve any concentration, sitting in funny positions, religious mumbo-jumbo, or, indeed effort. You just repeat a simple mantra for 20mins with your eyes closed and let your brain do what it wants.
To be honest I was sceptical at first. I just went cos I knew Lou really wanted to do it. But it has made me feel better, to meditate twice a day. I'm naturally quite a stressed out, anxious and socially anxious person. I repress a lot of negativity normally. Meditating lets out this stress and i can deal with day to day shite better.
As an extreme example, we went to Primark in Manchester on Sunday. It was absolutely packed from wall to wall with frantic bargain graspers. Grufty men barging into you, buggies bashing your legs, screaming kids, doddering biddies. Normally i'd be tearing my hair out. but i coped with that ok.
So anyway, TM is pretty good. David Lynch does it, apparently. I wouldn't say it's totally put me at peace with myself, but i can deffo get on with shit stuff day to day better, and i'm more positive about writing tunes etc now too.

its all based on a simple premise. taking a few minutes a day to sit, stand, lean, whatever you want can really help out your stress levels. I personally belive that its a skill we all have and don't need others to tell us how they do it. your body has its immune system that takes care of things on its own. but our brains need to be told to take a break, in these days of stressful multitasking, working, possibly having kids or a new family, we all need some "me time" to let out some steam. if you wait till your brain goes off like a kettle and you have a stroke you'll regret not taking a few minutes a day to feel silly and free.

yeah sounds great, anything that can help you relax and focus, and understand yourself is 100% great. I'm skeptical of the whole TM thing myself... heard about a friend of a friend who ran out there and spent thousands of dollars, learned how to bounce his ass with his energy and met some beautiful austrian woman, then ran off to india, haha... now THAT's enlightenment.

sweetness - I've just started on the meds too. I read Lynch's 'Catching the Big Fish' book
and got interested as he bigs TM up so much, but it's hard to find out what TM actually
consists of without ponying up for it. I found out my aunt went on a course and we talked
about it the other night - it sounds exactly like the same mantra technique I'm trying, that I got
from this book: link
That's a great book by the way. Really simple, comprehensive instructions and free from religious bias.
I don't really buy the whole importance of Mantra in the sense the TMers push - I'd say its important
to have a mantra that you feel comfortable with, but I'm not sure you can say one phrase has more
'power' than another.
Anyway I've been noticing the benefits. But I'm finding it hard to meditate as I'm tired from staying
up too late. That needs to change - and meditation has made me want to change it in a positive groovy
way, rather than forcing myself into it.

Yeah, i'm not sure that the specific mantra really matters. In TM you can let it change speed, sounds, length, anything you want really.
I'm sure it doesn't really matter what you start with. It works for me with the one i've got anyway. It wouldn't really make sense to write it down cos it would sound different in my accent, diff tones etc.
Like you say, it's just giving your brain a bit of time off. Sleep helps, obviously, but that's something i've struggled with in the past (mixing night shifts and day work doesn't help, or going out raving) meditating definately helps me sleep. Daydreaming is a similar thing too. it's letting your mind wander and clean itself out a bit.
