clive sinclair, inventor of the sinclair spectrum has again decided to tackle the problem of commuting in an overcrowded, overpolluted world. remember his last go? the incredibly badly received sinclair c5?
here's the new one : (the 'A' bike)

That it stands out from the competitors as an "ultra-compact" bike for "short hop" journeys - two miles from home to the Tube or from the train to the office.
Pedals and handlebars mean it is a bike; tiny wheels means it doesn't do distance.
"
lol! so its designed for going from your house to the train, then to yor work! and probably take the same amount of time as walking! (look st the size of those wheels!) with the added 'bonus' of having to carry the thing about and expand/contract it every time you need to use it.
congrats clive, you've done it again! ;)
(failed before even hitting the market, that is)

so assuming that the number of teeth is directly related to the gear size,
when travelling fastest you should
a) have the largest gear on the front(pedals) and smallest on the rear (wheel) or
b) smallest gear on the front (pedals) and largest on the rear (wheel)

Largest/largest, cause you want the most distance for your pedal. I'm pretty sure, but I'm only an MS.

ahhh.
But you've confused me.
In the link you provide, the authors give some imaginary numbers
Lowest Setting = 22 teeth front, 30 teeth back
Highest Setting = 44 teeth front/ 11 teeth back
Using my larger size = more teeth assumption, we can convert this to:
slowest = small front, large back
fastest = large front, small back
or did you post the wrong link?

Faster: small front, large back: gear ratio is 22/30, which means for every .73 revs you pedal the front gear, the back gear goes 1 revolution.
Slower: large front, small back: gear ratio is 44/11, which means for every 4 revs you pedal the front gear, the back gear goes 1 revolution.

well now we must definte FASTEST and SLOWEST.
I will definte them as the speed in which the bicycle is travelling
going back to your link, at a constant pedaling rate the authors say
small front, large back = 5.4 km/hr
large front, small back = 30 km/hr
If we assume that the fastest of these two is 30 km/hr, then your link suggests
SLOWEST TRAVELLING SPEED is small front/ large back
FASTEST TRAVELLING SPEED= large front, small back.
surely there's an engineer somewhere on em411? For fox sake!

im a microsoft certified systems engineer... good enuf?
my training tells me to launch the bicycle gear ratio wizard.. but i don't think i know where that is.

Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...
