i just don't buy the critique at all.
the amount of "what should i buy?" threads, though people are asking for the 200 dollar range, FAR exceeds the "what should i do with my gear that i already have?" threads. i think it just misses the point. you need to sit with any piece of gear for a long time to master it, expensive or not. that takes all the steam out of gear porn right there (is it REALLY THAT FUN to learn a whole new piece that does pretty much the same stuff your other stuff does?). personally, my gear lust peaked and then subsided once i got my current stuff together (g2 and modular). now i want to learn it. I'm very glad I got those pieces, though. they have fueled me musically far outweighing their material value.

astroid - I dont know if that was aimed at me, but dont you think its easier to say that after you have what you were lusting for? or may be I mis-read that...
It is part of my plan to dedicate a lot of time to the synth I get, not just to lust after the next thing. Although I am guilty of some "what should I buy" threads. ;)

yeah man. i have a synth museum in my basement and it ain't worth jack if you can't do anything with it. my year long creative block feels like it might be finally beginning to break, but i suffer anxiety when i go into the studio now. i'd probably feel less anxious if i only had a crapbook running ableton. of course when you have all the gear and you're being productive it's great but that doesn't happen nearly as often as i need it to.

not really.... i'm kinda just playing devil's advocate. however, like everyone else i think i'm doing a stellar job of living life and wanna be all big mouthed about my revelations. so chalk it up to uneasy megalomania

Mountains of gear used to impress me. Not so much anymore. I have very little gear now - but the general idea/rule for me is: if it's more than I can reach and tweak in real-time than it's probably beyond what I need. Limitations are far more in the mind than in the machine(s). And yeah, the grass is always greener... 'til you gotta pay someone to mow it. ;)

man that's a sweet rack of yarn... haha...
and yeah, I've had a long ass week, sorry I sounded so pissed there. Though I meant what I said. I probably would have been a little more subtle if I hadn't been serving rich people barons of beef all week long.

atom's(senior coconut) studio really hit home for me, because I make all my music with 2, maybe 3 pieces of gear. (synth, lappy, record player)
and for the most part, as far as creation goes, that's really all I need.
but sometimes I just want some toys!

I think we all have the innate need to 'buy' . . . when you see a 'new' produce with 'new' features you somehow thing it'll make your music sound 'new' too , but usually the opposite effect tends to happen. Hell, I felt guilty for buying the 256 (though i sold my 40h and so i saved a bit of dough) realizing I hadn't even scratched the surface of learning max/msp which I bought just before university ended to get the stellar student discount. If you're thinking of buying something that's $200+ and you have already bought a couple of things around that price range or more which you have yet to tinker/learn then I think you ought to really 2nd think the purchase.
I was about to splurge on the new Live 7 but I realize "What is it Live 7 will offer me that Live 6 doesn't?" and all in all it'll pretty much get me from the same point a to point b as Live 6 would...so I think I'll wait.

I bet making crap music on that modular setup is tons more fun than making crap music with the shitty gear I already have.

Internet hate machine - go!
But the honest truth is that gear is a large part in why I think making em is so fun. I find learning the ins and outs of simple-to-complex machinery to be incredibly rewarding for some reason. There's probably some freudian explanation involving penises and childhood traumas, but what the hell, doesn't really matter.
