just curious as the new year rolls around what everyone here is up to musically. what have you worked on this year? what are you working on now? plans for the immediate future? touring? recording?
it'd be nice to know what's going on with everybody.

This past year I found EM411 and it was nice of you to put up with my nonsense. I traveled a lot for work and thought I would get to spend a lot of quality time programming patches on my G1. I didn't travel for fun. I recorded a whole ton of field recordings. I got a Rhodes. I made some videos for work and for fun. I made some music that I'm happy about and I've adjusted my setup to something that is quite conducive to working, almost anyway.
This coming year I plan on making move videos for work and fun. And getting used to my new setup in such a way that I can play "live". Not that I really have much desire to play out to people but I like the notion of creating everything all at once; at least I want to try that way for a while since I haven't before . I need to gain some piano playing ability. I hope to travel less for work and more for fun. I am going to kayak down the Grand Canyon. That is actually the thing I am excited about most.

I'm sifting through lots of tunes and deciding on which to salvage / elaborate apon. My own self-criticism aborted my innitial EP of which 3 or 4 songs will find their way to my first full length effort. I plan on putting it out on my own... hopefully with some mastering help.
Having a blast helping some rasta-mangs w/beat production and additional insturmentation. They're calling the beats dancehall but I'm honestly not familiar... Kalimba, udu, djembe, dumbek, flutes, ukulele, sequencing. fun fun fun. I'd like to think im getting alot better with my production so thats decent. I'm also preparing for live shows w/my solo material.

2007 was all about the ramp chicago series of shows that Quantazelle and I put on - I got a chance to play with Tycho, Machinedrum, Near the Parenthesis, Cepia and so forth and make regular use of a really posh DJ booth. It was weird as it wasn't part of any long term plan on my part, I just sort of fell into it after booking Arctic Hospital a year ago and realized someone had to start booking interesting electronic music in Chicago.
I also got more into DJ'ing and I'm learning to love it. I found my way into this whole dub techno thing (see Deepchord, Echospace, Quantec, etc) and my internal pendulum is swinging more towards music that works in a club setting right now. I've loved Gas and the Kompakt Pop Ambient series for a long time and may also explore that sound more fully in 2008.
I hardly finished a single tune in the last year as I got wrapped up in performing/promoting and getting my "day job" career properly underway, hoping to get back to it as life gets a bit more stable in the coming months. In the meantime I'm putting out a disc of all Emulsion remixes in the spring on my friend Rob's label Lens.

Hmm, let's see, 2007 went by really fast (as years tend to become shorter and shorter each year - people told me it has something to do with age, I dunno.
As for others here, it was more about settling in, I worked for two years in my house, which was a lot of work, but it's getting there and looking pretty nice in some parts, so that payed off.
Just got a new job at a really nice ad agency, and despite that it looks like a lot of work, it tingles the creativity in a good way, and I always enjoyed the balance between the music & graphic work a lot, they sort of need eachother in my head.
Music-wise I made a lot of unfinished stuff, that is sort of 70% there, so I'm sitting on those, finishing one after another with a couple of weeks in between. Found out that it works really well for me, just putting down stuff, recording it to audio and then in the course of a month tweaking and mixing it, 'till I get something decent out of it. Was happy that Mixit was up again, and started doing a couple of those, sometimes I didn't finish them, but put all the sample mangling to good (future) use.
This has also been the year that I've taken more time to get into hardware, the trusty JP8000 (which I just used as a controller the last couple of years) has given me a few nice suprises, and also the Evolver has grown on me, and is now a constant in all of my music. Just managed to get a great deal on an incredible Roland SRE-555 Chorus-Echo, which 'll be properly (ab)used in my next tracks.
So next year I'll try to finish an album of 'non-minimal' techno-ish track, that sit nicely together, a bit like a mix-album, but with my own material, some going back quite a few years. Really looking forward to that, as well as performing small bits of it here and there.
The other plan is to start a band with a drummer and a guitarist, which will be the first time that I've played with musicians who are far better skilled than I am, that could be nice. We plan on making psychedelic, dubby murky stuff, with a lot of room for improvisation, mainly to play live gigs, we'll see how that turns out...

2007 saw my first couple of vinyl releases and I've been pretty productive music-wise the first half of the year. I relaunched the Neo Ouija label and had to deal with all the legal and bureaucratic hurdles that came with it, but it's been a great ride so far. now that I've finally secured some distribution I can at long last start putting out the new releases (starting with a killer 2 CD compilation featuring some of my musical heroes). Played some gigs, but not nearly enough to develop the kind of routine I'd like to have.
Started writing for a music technology magazine (thanks to yghartsyrt for hooking me up) and am doing freelance video and graphic stuff for a number of clients. happy to be able to live off of these various kinds of freelance jobs.
I also got into digital photography more seriously (yay digital SLR) and am using that as a great excuse to get out more often. ;)
next year: run label, make music, play live. life's good at the moment.

this year i played at stfy rome, 2 gigs in the local pub and stfu edinburgh AND ive got a gig TONIGHT!
i invented a good system for programming beats
i ran out of money to finish my studio which i had hoped to be using fully this year- i still need cables and patchbays
next year i will slowly collect cables and patchbays and then eventually record some music- its been years (apart from live sets)- the next generation of self triggering chaos music will be really incredible
i hope do do more gigs in chester- and try to make dancefloor material- hopefully i will get to sample a 909
maybe ill go to an stfu if ive got enough money- or maybe ill organise another one in chester

You know mosta this Mr Nick, but this year I:
Finished a record, which will be coming out on audiobulb next year, preceded by an ep on audiobulb and hopefully followed by a second full length I'm finishing now (remember that Terry Riley ripoff set I did?) -- if David isn't sick of me by then.
I wrestled with the death of my laptop and returning to my olde iMac, and to calm my nerves finally bought a legit and full version of max/msp...
Did various remixes and comp tracks.
Cedar AV did the same - we did that My Brightest Diamond remix this year right? Cedar AV is also finishing a record - which is actually pretty near to done at this point, just a few things to record, nothing left to write.
In retrospect I might have played more shows this year than in previous years, but I don't exactly remember.
Worked a new job that's ending now, and now I'm moving.
Guess that's it - what about you Nick? I'm not suitably up to date with your Headlights news - what was that video for?

I turn 25 in May so I wanna get my album done by then...I figured a quarter of a century ought to be easily enough time to make ONE ALBUM so that's my goal. Its about 1/3rd there, so it oughta be achievable hopefully.
Aside form that, I'd like to get the Mellotron and ORgan comps out on my label, I've got a new artist signed who makes music with a Wii so there'l be something free coming out by him and I'd like to put some more music out gratis too.
Oh yeah, and get rich, or at least not so in debt, that'd be cool.

Interesting to look at all these - inspiring, really. I always tend to feel like I'm a very lazy musician - and particularly so this last year...but maybe that's not as true as I thought when I honestly revue the facts.
2007 Musically: Remix for "American Idle" on iTunes & Beatport; remix for "Insects" on Slanted Black (finishing THIS WEEK - I swear it!); "deBasser" on Slanted Black/beatport; background audio/interface for Jay Is Games game-contests (2-4); sound fx/interface audio for "Onslaught 2" flash game; a bunch more "copepod" (non-dance) tracks that I still am not sure where/how I will release; also packaged two full albums w/artwork of copepod stuff. many unfinished but fiddled with dance-tracks, etc; submitted and rejected "audio art piece" for an instillation - concept harder to implement than originally thought. NO LIVE SHOWS. That's kinda sad, but my own fault/decision. Learning Live a little better in bits and bits. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how I would use it in a performance setting - there's so many damn options... and now I finally have a powerful laptop (Macbook Pro).
2007 Otherwise: Wasting way too much time on the internet. Again. Still. RRgggg. em411 is a time-sink, but at least there's a higher ratio of musically intelligent and interesting people here... at least that's my impression; lots of random photography; long-term relationship got more complicated to manage as his father's Alzheimer's worsened. Annoying/depressing situation for sure. Sucky for all involved. Started exploring Yoga, and short meditation options (very good!). Drank/partied too often on weekends/at parties. Maybe.
For 2008: Trying to compare myself (musically and otherwise) less to others - it's a very bad self-defeating habit. Finding a decently salaried job that I actually enjoy/look forward to in a field I'm interested in (unfortunately I have too many interests). I think I'm over free-lancing as my main source of income - too much work/mental energy to sustain. Exercising more and regularly... along with sleeping better!! More sound-design and re-mixing work. Being more aggressive about promoting myself, doing live gigs for real $$, and getting more original releases/labels that fit my output(s). Having a kinder outlook on the world and my society - which I've been at odds with most of my life. Impeach Bush/Cheney(!!!!). Drink less at parties/on weekends. Spend more time with musically inclined people and less with those not. Win MEGA-LOTTO JACKPOT!!!
One musical goal I'd really like to see happen is working with someone on a semi-regular basis to produce tracks with - in the studio as well as on-stage who can actually (gasp!) improvise a bit. I know lots of great producers that go white with the idea of performing live. I want an organic but dance-able feel somewhere between Air Liquide, Christian Vogel, Two Lone Swordsmen and Monolake. Our own sound... but it's sort of in the ballpark of. Any takers in NYC??

All of the above here, fuck I'm so tired, its good that I can put 99% of my time into this stuff, as if there weren't enough for me to finish I went out and scored a Genesis dev cart and recently a GP2X (which of course I have to code for haha). Honestly I just need to finish some more hardware releases on wayfar and everything will be pretty fn ace.

well this year might have been the most stupid year in my life up till this point... Had a pretty rough time and learned some lessons the hard way. Amazingly, I still got some things done during that period. Don't know how. I learned a lot of new things that i'm completely uniterested in and dont' like at all, so now I know some territory to avoid. And I also learned a few things about not being an asshole and caring more about other people. that was a good lesson.
Musically, I quit guitar because of stupid muscle problems with my body, and transferred all that freight train of energy into digital modular synthesis/noise music and shit... Pretty much all in reaktor. I'm just starting to make something worthwhile with it. Just like with guitar, it took a little over a year to start producing anything that I thought was good, it takes some patience, and I think i'm about at the 6 month point of being serious about working with DSP/synthesis type stuff.
Bagger288 is off the ground, we have a link website, and will be releasing some music, and I went out and played a couple of my first live gigs...
lots of other stuff but I don't want to be boring and gotta run!
cool to hear about what everyone else has been up to!

- working on an indie feature with a friend, doing sound but hopefully helping out with cam and other aspects
- no music plans really, whatever I have the energy for but I'm not going to commit to anything...
- getting back use of my left leg, that's my big goal for the year

@ tantan: hope your healing is uber-swift. take vitamin C every day...
@ ricemut: yeah - overall 2007 was pretty bad for me as well. my fear is that 'most stupid' could be anytime coming up for me... sooner for humanity in general. there's that negativity again... ;)
