When I first heard about the antivaccination lobby I thought it was some kind of weird intertubes joke. I mean, they were just playing, some kind of "save the whales and polio" joke, right? Right?
Wrong. They are dead serious.
And now it seems Donald Trump and Jenny McCarthy have joined the fray, claiming that vaccines cause autism.
A claim that has been shown to be incorrect.
A super hero team of paranoid new age scam artist homeopathy "remedy" selling pricks, the crappiest hair on tv and an mtv hasbeen, and they cannot even come up with some new meritless claim? What the fuck?
Sorry for ranting, the whole thing just gets me riled up.
And now back to the regular stuff, paper geese, smapples etc. | |

Anyway, I understand the desparate need many people feel to find the right rack to hang some blame on for our bizarrely spiraling autism occurences. It's very frustrating to still have nothing tangible to point the finger at when a child develops autism or Asbergers. On the other hand, the angry uninformed subscription to conclusions from bad / non science is no more sensible than blaming the devil for your own bad behavior. Emotional, naive lobbying like this accomplishes absolutely nothing except to distract from more legitimate investigations.

vaccines often have crazy shit in them that can be pretty crazy, espeicaly for young ppl. like mercury
my gf almost died from a vaccine
so yeah maybe vaccines have nothing to do with autism, but they do need to be reformed, preserved with things that are not neurotoxins

crabster that self diagnosing link is excellent. The comments on that page are pretty telling. We seem to have an insatiable need to self diagnose so as to declare our uniqueness in some way. I sense a lot of that in those posts.

i've known one asperger's kid. my musician friend showed me some of his poetry, which was INSANE AND WONDERFUL, and asked if i'd start a band with him. one day, i go over to meet this fellow. the convo:
me: it's nice to meet you. i've read your writing and i think it's really cool
him: it's the feeling upon meeting someone and admiring their writing
me:...
and my mind was blown forever. he had some strange symptoms, like spinning, being kinda annoying and not having his feeling hurt when told to stop being annoying. haha. it was really fun.

Suffice it to say, epidemiology and pathology are not the domains of the general public- if you've ever met an epidemiologist or a pathologist, you've probably noticed that they're damned smart. Sometimes you just have to shut up and take the word of a field of experts.
But seriously, how hard did these people have to fail science class to not grasp the fact that a variable applied to all objects of study cannot be proven or disproven?
I feel that the increased awareness about what autism is has contributed more than anything to the increase in documented cases. Even 20 years ago, most individuals with something like autism were just considered "eccentric," or "homeless." Like ADHD, I feel that nobody is taking into account what these disorders look like in ADULTS!

I think they say they are more like "triggers" to autism, more than a cause of it. And its not the vaccine itself that they blame, but the other crap that cc mentioned with mercury being the suspect most mentioned. They also say the same about watching too much tv at a very early age.
Doctors thought that my youngest daughter had autism, so we looked into a lot of this over the past year or so. And yes she has been on a gluten free diet for a while now. Say what you will, but we have seen improvements in her behavior (no more screaming fits, more social interaction, more eye contact..etc). The diet won't "cure" anything, but may help with development of kids with special needs. BTW, we are going to see a nutritionist soon to get official direction on this. We were just waiting for a diagnosis, which we have now.
Her actual illness is not autism, but is part of the autism spectrum. She was diagnosed with Rett syndrome recently, which is physically the worst condition in the autism spectrum. It is a pretty rare mutation of one of the x chromosomes in girls (boys born with this do not live for very long, only one X chromosome). It is totally random, not inherited...which means it can happen to anyone. It has been pretty rough for me and my family lately, but it is some-what a relief to finally know what she has.

i have just been back to my hometown and my mates mum, who is a primary school teacher, was complaining how many of the kids in her class had autism. i have worked with quite a few autistic people and know some musicians who you could describe as on the autistic spectrum. i heard about the vaccine idea a while ago and read quite a lot about other reasons why people might be on the spectrum.
i think the large rise in autism is more to do with the fact that they are being diagnosed. as deltasleep already mentioned autistic people would previously be excluded from society. now we diagnose, and sometimes help these people fit in with our so called normal society.
speaking generally, i find autistic people usually have high levels of intelligence and skills in areas such as music, maths and technology. if our society was more progressive we would help these people to achieve what they are capable of, rather than creating panic and fear about what causes autism.

crabster: some are cool about it and positive about it if they know her (shes an awesome kid!), but sometimes people just don't know what to say and just kind of sit there with their mouth open, in shock. We have been told by one of the doctors that it is like a loss of a child (bullcrap! I haven't lost anything.), and we have had a couple of family members in total denial about it (or overly positive), but for the most part our friends are really awesome people and react well with a realistic view of it.
Well, it is almost guaranteed that she will never talk and the use of her hands will be limited as well. So sign language will be minimal if any, although she knows a couple of basic signs already at 2.5 yrs old. So we have to expect communication to be limited to eye contact and body language for her whole life pretty much. She has showed us that she might be able to go beyond that, but its best to expect the worse just in case (for me anyway). We caught it pretty early on, so all types of physical/speech therapy had already started almost a year before she was actually diagnosed. So we have a very positive view of things now.
