I hear that music videos are all the rage and I would like to make one. I have no idea where to begin when it comes to software and animation. Not like Shrek animation, just making colors swish like in my head. Do they make that? I'm thinking kinda arsty fartsy and abstract with maybe a few blips of the "take on me" video aesthetic. And bouncing cars. Maybe some bunny suits. I'll prol give things a shot and then in a huff find someone to do it for me out of frustration :P

you can probably find a hacked copy of adobe premier pretty easily. and aftereffects should give you the swooshy colors you need.

"arrrgh, matey"
I was playing with my PS3 the other day, with the little "Playstation Eye" camera/motion detector dealy, and the video editing software has a very handy stop-motion animation feature that 'ghosts' your prior frame on the screen before you snap the next one, so you can do a more accurate time-lapse motion capture -- looks like it could be hours of fun for making music videos...
I figured if I were to do a music video, my first one would probably be done that way -- on my coffee table with my Playstation. heh.

yeah after effects makes it pretty easy to add layers and mess with transfer modes just like in photoshop. you can then animated those layers of colored stuff, add effects to them, etc. its a fun program.

oops didnt notice the take on me part. after effects can = artsy fartsy. i thought they hand drew each frame for the take on me stuff. then composited those on top of the footage. that is from memory though and when i saw something on how they made that video a very long time ago, it was way before i knew how any of this stuff works, so what i barely remember about how they made it.

A video camera should be your first step
Use of any software should be your last step.
getting footage and messing with it is way more fun, and produces way better results than trying to generate everything in the computer.
Washes of color.
Put some diffusion over your TV, put some on a window while driving/on the bus, film lights, film lamps, wiggle the camera around to get streaks, shoot through things like screens and lace and saran wrap.
Go and get some led's and some diffusion paper and tin foil. Reflect the led light from the foil onto the diffusion papar and film it from the other side.
Think about how you can get all the stuff you need without having to use the computer.
Pour cans of paint into water in an aquarium while shining a REALLY bright light into the water of to one side. Keep filming until that water is BROWN!
Get some cotton balls and tape them to your ass and run around the house like a mad rabbit while your grandparents sit calmly in the furniture watching you. FILM IT!

get a plastic bag. stick a hole in it big enough for the lens to poke out.
put camera in bag.
wave bag around.

i actually have some footage from live sets but they are on my ancient 8MM camera and i can't get them onto my laptop i think if i can get my hands on a newer 8mm camera with the right output i can start transfering things.
thanks for some of the ideas

don't really need a video camera if your not looking for long shots of motion footage. by using just a digital camera you can do stop motion. put together frames into gif animations (one for each gesture) and then arange those in QT to have a sequence. there are many freeware programs that will splice the audio into it. i did a video like this over the summer. it was about 4 minutes long, and consisted of a cat dancing. even though the video was awesome( better than anything pre-1990) my friend wasn't impressed with it at all. i just don't think he understood that i made it frame by frame. he kept asking where i got stuff in it. hello! i drew it on my computer like am asshole! thanx for the favor of watching it and thinking it sucks

i worked in a camera store and transfering 8mm to dvd was one of the jobs. basically you send off up to 6 hours of 8MM and they put it onto a DVD for you. i've seen this offer at other places and its about 25-$30

Oh snap. I'm thinking about making a vid too. I'm thinking about going the sketchy hand-drawn animation direction. Thinking that maybe toon boom studio would be good. Lots of work of course. But good.

8mm? Is that film or video tape. If it's film = MUCH more expensive.
Yes to after effects... and premier too.
But if you have a mac, imovie is free and one of the simplest most intuitive editing program out there (at least a few years ago it was).
