--> fredo's review blog got me thinking about my last "review". every year i make a cd of tracks that i have done that year and play it to my mum and dad.
this year was no exception. i played the tracks to them in the car.
i was kind of proud of some of them as i am singing and playing the guitar and piano.
first of all my dad kept turning them down, as he needed to "concentrate" on driving the car at 30mph all the time.
then when we did get to listen to them, my mum made the following critique (imagine a non-plussed mum voice):
"it sounds like mike oldfield. your good at creating crecendos, and then dropping out"
my dad
"yeah very mike oldfield, is that you playing the piano?"

it was like the whole world had stopped. i think my mum was right. its scary.
anyone else experienced devastating critiques by parents?

I've given up on the idea of my parents liking my music.

Not that they won't like it, it's just that if they don't like it, well, they'll probably end up pushing my buttons (either intentionally or non-intentionally).

But that was because they installed them.

Last time I played anything I've written to my parents was maybe 15 years ago. I'm happy if they want to give it a listen, but the truth is that they have no experiencial or other framework to help them understand, relate to, or respond to what I'm doing. I don't expect them to, they're very different people with very different ears, so this doesn't matter much to me.

One of the best "experimental" songs I ever heard was called "What Metal sounds like to your mother".

It was 10 minutes of distortion and some guy ranting in an unintelligible cookie-monster voice, and it was rad.

I gave my family cds of my tracks for christmas (mainly cause i lamely locked myself out of the lab where i was building the real presents), and I gave my parents an ambient set of mine, and they really liked it! They called 3 times to say how much they liked it. LOL, who'd have thought

My father is a musician, and I often play him stuff I did, and I can see how he doesn't really like the beats at all, but he's pretty supportive. It's just, yeah, it doesn't click.

last track i played for my mom, she listened for about a minute and said "that's good!" and then took the headphones off in the middle of the song.
that's usually how it goes when i play something for the parents or friends

I once played my dad a techno track I had written about 13 years ago when I still spoke to him. he said dismissively, "Its just all rhythms."

my mom likes some of my music, especially 2 tracks i did for a play. she actually introduced me to drum&bass in '96 (doc scott, bukem etc) so she has a clue of modern electronic music.

my mum actually likes some of my/our music. the melodic ones that have less 'intense' beats and some of the more melodic 'millicent' stuff i do with radio909.
the techno stuff...... she isn't too keen on. and she doens't like harsh beats and dissonance..... she once came into my room and said "can't you make something that sounds a bit nicer?"

my dad .... he doesn't really say anything about if he likes it or not .... but i cartainly know what he thinks is 'too loud'.

My mum, unfortunately, never got to hear any electronic music I produced [I think she would have liked it though] but I did do a bungee jump in front of her. She had to take sedatives for a couple of weeks after though and made me promise I would never do anything like that again.

yeah, about 15 years ago I played my mom some beats I was working on. Don't think she got it on any level.

my mom just periodically asks, "are you still doing music?"

I say "yeah", and a brief look of disappointment flashes across her face before the subject is changed.

My parents used to make so much fun of the music I was listening to that I didn't really even bother showing them what I made. My dad only became interested when I started playing guitar. Now I think my dad and my aunt are the only people who ever even read my blog or listen to anything I make!
