--> fredo's review blog got me thinking about my last "review". every year i make a cd of tracks that i have done that year and play it to my mum and dad.
this year was no exception. i played the tracks to them in the car.
i was kind of proud of some of them as i am singing and playing the guitar and piano.
first of all my dad kept turning them down, as he needed to "concentrate" on driving the car at 30mph all the time.
then when we did get to listen to them, my mum made the following critique (imagine a non-plussed mum voice):
"it sounds like mike oldfield. your good at creating crecendos, and then dropping out"
my dad
"yeah very mike oldfield, is that you playing the piano?"

it was like the whole world had stopped. i think my mum was right. its scary.
anyone else experienced devastating critiques by parents?

yeah, i don't think my parents really have any idea what i do with music. i left a bunch of my production on my mom's machine when i visited for christmas, but they haven't checked any of it to my knowledge. i doubt they'll be into it, but at least they'll get an idea of what i do.

they know that i make music, i enjoy it, and play at all night dance parties (i used to borrow my mom's minivan to haul equipment to raves). they're really supportive regardless of the fact that they've probably never heard one second of the music i make or play.

I did do a bungee jump in front of her. She had to take sedatives for a couple of weeks after though and made me promise I would never do anything like that again.
when mom saw the video of my first skydive, she asked, "that's the only time you're doing that, right?" i said i might try a couple more times. a couple thousand as it turns out... i think that's the only one they really worry about.

It makes me sad that so many of us share Mom-indifference.

I'm going to register emom411.com dammit and start a fan club for EM mothers!

when I was younger I know of at least two friends' mom's who didn't appreciate my musical influence on their children, so I'm beyond just inspiring my own parents' indifference!

OK, bad joke, but made me lol a little in my mouth

Roshi, where else do you lol from besides your mouth?

Wait, don't answer that.

My dad just isn't a much person...he's totally tone deaf and the last cd he bought, the new Bob Dylan, he bought to test out his car stereo. My mom doesn't listen to a ton of music either, but this Christmas, I was with my folks listening to my mom's "Eclectic Christmas Mix" that she made and a song of mine from like 6 years ago came on. That made me feel good. Even if it's my parents and friends, I like knowing someone's enjoying my music.

My Mum said: "I liked the third one. It sounded like there was a chicken behind the settee."

my dad says he hates my music less then other electronic music
i only ever gave music i released to my parents. they always really enjoyed the look and such of it. and they play it to friends who are into more experimental stuff (my dad loves freejazz and stuff and plays tons of instruments. he even maes music on his computer) but we never talked about my music. i like how this relationship concerning music works.

i dont think my mum likes my music- she says she does but i think she likes the fact that it was me that made it rather than she likes the music itself
she came to my last gig and she seemed to enjoy it but thats probably more to do with my monster suit rather than the sounds and she likes it when i do something rather than my usual nothing

At Christmas once I put one a CD mlbot made me with his arrangement onto cheesy VSTs of a huge number of general midi Christmas songs. Within ten minutes my mom and step father were begging me to turn it off.

I think you should all tell your parents "Oh yeah, well lets listen to the music you've made!! I thought so! You critics are all the same, you are all about wrecking other peoples creations but you dont create anything yourself!"

lol

best offense etc.

except that my mom would bust out her 12 string and kick my ass to the moon while my step dad would start honking his trumpet to further my shame

ive only really let my mum hear the more melodic tunes, the ones where you can identify actual wooden instruments.
she seems to like them.
My mum told me on a few occasions, i should be doing more artwork, cos i sold a few paintings...and thats what my degree is in...shes probably right.
she would have freaked out if she knew how much time i spent on my tunes when i was unemployed and living at home.

my dad used to compliment my guitar playing when i was younger, if he were still alive i reckon he'd being tell me to do more painting though. haha.
