I like delays. I especially like bucket brigade delays and crusty digital ones without menus.
Does anyone have any pointers? I've been combing ebay and there certainly seems to be quite alot on offer from companies I've never heard of before, like Evans, Better and Deltalab, and cannot find stuff on the interwebs on either.
A vintagesynth.org-like resource for old fx boxes would be nice, but barring that, does anyone here have any hints on where to look for information?
Help?

yeah, the little screw is there but i haven't done anything to it yet... don't know why, i mean i opened one 1005 for nothing?!?!?! i'll try tonight. the dod dfx9 also has them.

i bought a boss DM-300 analog delay a while back. it's a big thing. rack mount size (but not made to go in a rack). it's a chorus/delay and has CV input so i can hook an envelope or LFO up to it for weirdness. it was $170 but it's like new plus i had to out bid jdg on it ;). i think they usually go for about $130-140..
anyway- it sounds great on everything. is easy to use. and worth every penny. the DM-100 is the pricey one. i've seen them on the ebay for $150-$325

Why not make your own analog delay with Two or Three Reel To Reel Recorders?
You can do this with just stereo or mono ones but it would be great and cheap enough to do with four track r-t-r's these days.
Stereo RTR can be as cheap as $20 apiece. Four track as cheap as $150
There are a lot of configurations you can do but the idea is that you make a tape loop that will feed through all three machines and loop back to the first.
Then you play with the cord connections and the input levels. monitor from all three stereo headphone outputs and record all six signals then play with it in your DAW.
Boing!!
Actually play around with any of the connections. This used to be a whole school of electronic music for 40 years so there are even older guys than me who have forgotten more about this than we'll ever learn.

just gotten the Roland Chorus Echo SRE-555, and it's a motha of a delay
big, fat warm and unpredictable (sometimes) with a great chorus and a noisy spirng reverb thrown in two
built like a tank, it will surely outlive me, and tapes are not that hard to come by either
the Korg SE-500 and the Dynacord EC-504 are more built-like-a-tank tape delay, that can be found for cheaper than the famous Roland units
as for a (cheaper) digital one, the Roland SDE-330 is a good choice too, as is the TC D-Two (a bit pricier)
there are some Dynacord units that are pretty great too, and again, are not that expensive (and well built too)
+2 on the yamaha E1005, only 300 ms though...

radio shack/realistic reverb
basically a bbd slapback, but you can replace 1 resistor and 1 capacitor for way longer max echo times and extreme feedback. very crunchy, and tons of clock bleedthrough.
i love the pds20/20! internal trimpot makes it go really low fi like 30 seconds! and you can swap a resistor to increase the modulation depth. i don't really like it on high hats or anything high frequency, but i love to use it to loop mixer feedback.

i had a deltalab effectron 2, with 1024 ms of delay including infinite loop, aquired freely. it was very warm and nice for autofeedback as well. not very roadworthy, tho. I took it to a gig in my car on a cold day and when i got there it was broke. good sound (tiny bit of digital whine? could have been my unit, since it sounded kinda like the broken sound), i'd buy another if i could find it for ~20 bucks.
now i've got a digitech RDS 3.6, which doesn't soudn quite as nice, but has much more delay time and slightly nicer infinite loop control. bought that one for ~$25 USD including shipping off ebay.
both delays had the nice effect of pitching shift when you turn the delay time knob.

I didn't read everyone's posts so I don't know if its been mentioned yet but try looking at Home Brew Electronics (HBE) Mimic Mock I and/or II. I has 300ms max and II has 400 ms max.
I've always been impressed with the AD9. And Robert Keeley makes a moded AD9. Check him out, he's the guy. And if you're going to get a compressor while you're at it... his Keeley 4 knob is as good as they get.

Most all stompbox BBD delays use the SAD chips or the MN series chips, MXR, Ibanez you name it they're used in flangers too. This is a kind of archaic way of figuring out what chips are in what, but you can peruse the Free Information Societys schematics section.

I have an Ibanez AD-9 (Reissue) that I love.
After tweaking the trimpots inside, it now self-oscillates.
The oscillation is like a drone though, not a stepped or percussive or 'UFO landing' sound like many other analogue or digital delays.
MXR have unveiled a new analogue delay at NAMM.
600ms, Time, Mix and Feedback controls with a switch for modulation. There are internal trimpots for modulation depth and frequency.
Apparently it has a street price of $150 - In the UK that probably means about £90 though...
I've got my eyes on it.
