slightly old news, but since the hilarious "spat" between jay-z and frederic rouzaud i've been thinking a lot about brands and music. the good old days of celebrity endorsements seems to have been surpassed by the current batch of rappers name-checking brands without getting paid.
leornard pitts in the chicago tribune said: " Rap could have been, should have been, a truth-teller and world-shaker. Instead, it has largely contented itself with being free advertising for corporate titans, selling fake cool.
It is painful to know that Jay-Z has sold that lie to young people by the millions. What's more painful is that apparently, he also bought it himself."
gideon rachman in the economist said: "n his number one hit “Hard Knock Life”, Jay-Z raps, “Let’s sip the Cris and get pissy-pissy”. Cristal has been so visible at Mr Combs’s concerts that onlookers have wondered whether the venerable champagne house was sponsoring the event."
what bugs me the most about all of this is that big corporations (not cristal, tho) are spending millions of dollars employing marketing firms not just to advertise their products, but also to train the next generation to be better consumers and more responsive to advertising.
anyone up for making a compilation dedicated to dissing brand names?

I think it's the fact that I actually like film that makes me so irritated about it. why all the remakes? Is rating movies based on the amount of people in the seats really fair when, those movies that are "number one" just have a bigger budget and thus more advertising? The average low budget movie in the U.S. cost $9 million, is that really low-budget?. Why the hell would someone classify "a scanner darkly" as an action adventure?? Is $200 million dollars too much to spend on a movie??

back to rappers and the bling bling crowd... i saw a bling bling kid driving around in a bling bling car with a fucking gigantic nike logo sticker across the back window. no shit, it took up the whole damn window. it's a longshot, but i'm betting he doesn't have a sponsorship from nike.
what's the next step? reebok tattoos?

If you listen to hip hop for the music, flow or beats, then there's tons of choices out there, but if you listen for the message in the lyrics, then the only group that hasn't lost the true roots of hip hop is The Coup.
Those guys have to be some of the most intelligent rappers out there... very anti-capitalist, anti-brand, anti-statusquo... and they do it brilliantly.

There's only one true hip hop group? C'mon, that's just silly.
