I don't get 2nd life. I've "played" it before... it looks like shit and runs like shit... it seems to be hype to me too. I always thought it was nothing more than a Furry sanctuary, but hey, if you say lots of people use it, I believe you.

Sorry, I don't mean to be shitting on this blog. What I meant to say is "Wow, I had no idea you could make money in 2L!"

I'm with mechp. I opened it up and wasted an afternoon trying to make my avatar look funny, trying to build my own objects, and floating over area after area that I wasn't allowed to go to. then I decided that it was fucking stupid and uninstalled it.

I hate that stuff. But I love those SA Griefers and what they do in there.

LOL! it was actually reading about the PNs on Encyclopedia Dramatica that made me want to join! then I realized it was too much trouble to try to find Ft. Longcat and I'd probably be better off just enjoying the lulzy ass youtube vids

i played it a lot last year, so much so that i had to pretty much stop because once you get to know people in it (there is a huge em community), it can become way too much of a time suck. sadly, i think i have to agree that the people who are truly successful in it can't be participating in "real life" as much as they should....

but let me know when it's up, sometimes i still login and i'll come by.

wow, this is all pretty far out. From that Wired article:

People laughed at those attacks, but for Prokofy Neva, another well-known Second Life real estate entrepreneur, no amount of humor or creativity can excuse what she sees as "terrorism." Prokofy (Catherine Fitzpatrick in real life, a Manhattan resident, mother of two, and Russian translator and human-rights worker by trade) earns a modest but bankable income renting out her Second Life properties, and griefing attacks aimed at her, she says, have rattled some tenants enough to make them cancel their leases. Which is why her response to those who defend her griefers as anything but glorified criminals is blunt: "Fuck, this is a denial-of-service attack ... it's anti-civilization ... it's wrong ... it costs me hundreds of US dollars."

yeh, people make their living here no problem. it's crazy.

griefers are funny, i think the people who freak about them need to realize IT'S NOT REAL.

haha amazing! 'Get to the choppaaaaaaa!'

its just another place

like your local record store or bar that plays music

its just another place

just one day it might be a big place

and it makes sense to be established early - looking for the opportunities....

i wish it was so easy.
prison, just another place. get a rep in there now!

imo 'It's not real' doesn't carry any weight as a reply to perceived abuses in a domain like SL. room has it right, 'its just another place', with people in it. And like anywhere else it's up to the people in that domain to figure out the norms there, and to decide whether or not 'anything goes'.

I can't think of a reason to visit the place, but it's fascinating to watch and read about how things are developing there. There was an article somewhere about the potential of 2nd life as an environment in which to do (social) science in. It was interesting, i lost the link.

Good luck room!

it's real abuse, but there is no pain or suffering that happens, just an inconvenience or interruption in service. i've been griefed many times, it's not a big deal- certainly not enough to liken it to terrorism. i guess that's what i have a problem with.

i agree that to be in there early is good, but like i said, i found it way too easy to get sucked into, and i like going outside once and awhile. last year i would literally be in there for 8 or so hours a day, no problem.

i'm not judging it

i just want to be in there - so if they want to interact with audiobulb they can

who knows - i might end up releasing an album from artist based in 2L

i was offered a few shows-people play live sets i there a lot.
